I knew something was off. All last night I was preparing myself for the worst. I kept checking up on Paarthurnax throughout the night because I couldn’t sleep due to being so nervous about his surgery this morning. Well, turns out I had the right to worry.
I was napping while we waited for the word to go pick him up from surgery and I see my mom walk into my room. I immediately knew what was wrong and then she told me he didn’t make it through the surgery.
Apparently his heart couldn’t handle the drug that puts him to sleep for the surgery and gave out during the procedure. I never cried so hard in my life.
I also can’t help but feel responsible for his death. I knew something was wrong, but I ignored the feeling. Everyone kept telling me he would be fine and that he was a strong boy. He still is a strong boy. I wish I could rewind time and make it so the surgery never happened.
I don’t know if I’ll be getting another bunny. At least not any time soon. I always wanted to get Paar a friend, but I don’t know if I can handle one for awhile. Seeing Paar’s pictures is hard enough right now.
I will be picking him up from the vets later to lay him to rest at our new home.

Has anyone else lost their baby while just being spayed/neutered? I hear all these success stories and then mine turns for the worst.

First of all, it is NOT your fault. Not at all. You did what you and everyone else thought was best. Who knows? If you hadn’t it might have ended way worse than going peacefully in his sleep. It’s not your fault at all. I promise it does get easier. I’ve never lost a bunny but I have lost a sister. Death seems like the worst thing but Paar is very happy where he is now, I promise.

I am so very sorry to hear about your loss of Paar. It is not your fault. If it hadn’t been this time, it may have happened for some other surgery or reason due to his heart. He went peacefully, with no pain and he was oblivious to it all so he wasn’t afraid. You were doing what you and many others consider to be the best. You wanted what was best for him, and he knew that. Paar wouldn’t hold you at fault for this, and you shouldn’t either. Take your time to grieve and don’t let anyone tell you your feelings or mourning are invalid. Don’t rush yourself. Be gentle to yourself.

And yes- I’ve lost a bunny during neutering. You are not alone. Larkin passed while he was coming out of the anesthetic and his lungs failed him. I too had had a bad feeling– but it had been for his first appointment to get neutered, so I listened to it and kept him home because I figured I was picking up on him having a cold or something and wanted him to feel perfect for his big day. So I rescheduled and it was during the second appointment, when he actually went, and I had no bad feelings, and was completely confident I would be bringing him home – alive and well- in a few hours, and alas, this was not what happened.

Believe me, you will always miss your bunny, but the pain, guilt and second-guessing will ease with time. Take your time. Your bunny would want you to feel their love and appreciation for the care you provided them during their life.

I’m very sorry about the loss of your sweet Paar. You are not at all responsible for his passing. We all have fears and anxiety before our bunnies are going into surgery.
