I’m aware that some litters like pine and cedarwood have oils that can change the liver enzyme levels on a rabbit, we’ve only had pine shavings to go off of lately, although they do not have a strong smell of pine, it hardly smells much really, but just in case I wanted to know how long should I have my bun on wood pellets before spaying?

I don’t want to have any odds against us and I want her to be as healthy as possible before spaying. I’ve done some research on the topic of the shavings and health, most people that studied it just said that it can interfere with how medication works on a rabbit and not necessarily cause long time health problems, although when I make the switch it will be permanent, I tried wheat pellets from Oxbow and it was much better litter, than shavings, we just didn’t have the money to afford it and we never saw actual wood pellets in stores.

From what I understand, the phenols in pine and cedar shavings are what cause respiratory problems in rabbits, and those can in fact be long-term.

Better reason to get her on to wood pellets. She hasn’t had any respiratory problems yet so I hope they do not develop.

The wood pellets are as a rule sold in tractor supplies and stores where you get home-improvement stuff, because they’re meant for warming houses by burning them in special wood stoves. In some areas they’re only available during the cold season.

Some feed stores sell straw pellets meant as bedding for horses. They’re a little bit more expensive than the wood stove pellets and they’re not as good as keeping odors to a minimum (in my experience), but they’re perfectly bunny safe and very good for composting. For horses you’re supposed to water the pellets, but there’s no need for that in a bunny litter-box, it’s just to make it soft and comfy for the horses’ hooves.

I think I know a place on my way to uni that sells them, I’ll pick them up tomorrow if so, there’s a store that specializes in firewood and they did have wood pellets, but I expected it to be scented pellets for bbq. Thanks.
