Hey guys, I’m getting Smokey fixed on the 26th and I was wondering if I should prep some stuff in advance in case he starts getting GI stasis. I’ve heard pineapple juice? Should I get him use to drinking that now so I don’t have to fight him then? Is there anything as far as med. emergency stuff I should prepare, like antibiotics I should have at hand, bandages… and so forth. (also should the pineapple be fresh or is bottled ok?) I want to be ready In case something goes wrong since I live a little far from the vet. Thanks for any advice and past experience you can give!!!

Smokey’s a boy? In which case, neuters tend ro go really well – easy on tne bun – and the boys generally bounce back almost like nothing ever happened.

If you want to have comfort items on hand, Metacam from your vet for any pain you may notice (get at least a few days’ suplly), baby gas drops (simethicone) in case the anesthetic leaves him gassy, his favourite treat foods, lots of very wet fresh greens, fresh hay and water, and snuggly blankets in case he’s cold while the drugs leave his system.

Best of luck and easy fix for (((Smokey)))

It’s no use giving pineapple juice in advance. Stasis is uncommon in boys after a neuter, as Q8 says, most boys do very well and bounce right back in 1-2 days.

I can’t add much to what Q8 has already said. Serve his water in a bowl rather than a bottle because he might not want to bother with a bottle when he’s disoriented after anestesia. Some boys need warming up with a hot water bottle, but that’s uncommon. The important thing is to get him to start eating as soon as possible after you get him home.

As far as the pineapple juice goes I just meant so he would get use to the taste so I wouldn’t have to fight him if he needed it. And thanks for the water bowl tip, I didn’t think of that. I will be taking his landing out for at least a week after his neuter, also since his litter box/hay and water are up there. Thanks!
