I have a 3 month old albino lop rabbit and i was thinking do rabbits really need pellets? Because if you think about it back in the day pellets didn’t exist so they must have survived on water, vegetables and hay. So what do you guys think? Should i start buying pellets

I think young rabbits do need pellets to support their growth. Hopefully someone else can chime in on specific ages here because I have never owned a rabbit under the age of one.

But adults can certainly do fine on hay and veg – mine all do. It’s definitely worth doing lots of research first just to be safe though – make sure you get quantities right to safely replace the pellets. It isn’t a bad thing to feed them pellets though – pellets are very healthy and meet their nutritional requirements. Pet rabbits are not wild rabbits, nor are they the same as rabbits from “back in the day” so that really isn’t the best analogy. We have bred and changed them a lot as a species and we need to make sure we cater for that. But yes, adult rabbits can certainly live without pellets. I’m just not so sure about young ones but I do think they are more beneficial while a rabbit is still growing.

I do feed Panda and Fernando pellets, but only a very small quantity (1/8 cup or so per rabbit, a total of 1/4 cup in the bowl, according to the directions on the bag) per day in the morning as breakfast get-me-going. The pellets I offer them are Oxbow Essentials Adult Rabbit Food, which is timothy-based (adult rabbits in good health don’t need alfalfa) and contains 25% to 29% crude fiber, nearly as much as the mixed hay that comprises the core of their daily diet. These pellets contain a wide variety of nutrients that they might or might not necessarily get with other components of their diet, and so far I think they’re good for my buns. They certainly seem to enjoy them; they go enthusiastically for their bowl every morning!

My vet is not a fan of pellets. My little lop only gets about a TBSP of pellets a day due to frequent GI issues. It really improved with the reduced pellets.

But young, growing bunnies do need the extra calories and nutrition from pellets.

Here is some great info on Bunny Diet:
