        Hi all!!

I have a few questions related to my bun’s litter habits. First off some background info. I got it VERY young. About 6 weeks of age – I didn’t know at the time they should only be weened at 8 weeks and will not use that supplier again. It seemed to litter train quite quickly. It only peed in the box but I found the occasional poop outside of the box. It free roams in my room but has a nice hutch. I do not like to confine it to its hutch, however. I also do not know if it’s a buck/doe. Recently he gained access to my bed. I love that it can jump up and come cuddle, it is very tame and loves to be pet. BUT ever since being allowed on the bed it pees on the bed constantly. I cleaned everytime and got rid of the odor. Recently I read that when still newish (I’ve had it for 2 weeks) you should leave the pee as it’s their way to mark their territory. But it’s becoming excessive. He pees like 6-8 times on it in a day/during the night. How do I teach him not to? I eben put a litterbox on the bed even but this doesn’t seem to help. Then, next thing. He started pooping EVERYWHERE. All over the room and bed and next to its litterbox even though the pee is still only in the box (save for those on the bed). I don’t know how to get him to understand that poos also go in the box. I pick them up (there’s a whole lot!!!) and throw them in the box but he doesn’t seem to get it. Is this because he is still young? Does he have too much space? He has his own corner where all his food and toys and his cage and litter box etc are. The poos were usually confined to this area. But not anymore. Also, his food/water is next to his box which worked perfectly in the beginning. But again, not anymore. Please any guidance will be greatly appreciated as I’m a first time bun owner. ♡

he is reaching sexual maturity you should consider getting him neutered to help with the marking behaviour. I am in the same boat at the moment with the bed wetting but my boy was just neutered so I am hoping to get it all sorted in coming weeks. You will need to continue to collect the poops (not all have to go in the box…just a handful the rest you can vacuum) and out the pee soaked tissue or paper towel in the litter box for him. You should also start looking for the “pee face” and the infamous butt and tail raise as he is about to pee and pick him up and move him the litter box same after if the deed was already done on the bed and you saw it happen. Then if he does go in the box give him a treat like a handful of pellets or something he likes. But pick something small cause you will have to reward him a few times a day during this process and you don’t want to over feed him treats.

If all else fails put him back in his cage and limit his space again until he again starts using the litter box. But make sure he does not chew on the cage as that will ruin his teeth.

Hi Rookie! Thanks so much for the advice. However, I read they should only be neutered at 6 months? He is only 6 weeks now. I feel terrible that I got him at 4 weeks old…the poor thing. He should still be with its momma. Anyway, he seems happy and I give him a lot of attention. But I never confined him to his cage. I didn’t like the idea. He free roamed from the start. My room isn’t all that big. About 4×5 meters (excuse the metric units). At first he had a HUGE travelbox as his ‘cage’ where he could sleep if he wanted to. Always open. But I had a hutch built. And it replaced the travelbox but is also always open. He jas two foodstations both with litterboxes, one inside the hutch and one outside but still in his corner. Can I teach him without having to confine him?? He hates it as I once closed the cage to clean the room and he freaked out.

You can it is just harder. It’s the same steps as before. Keep cleaning up and putting some of it back in the box and putting him back in the box too.

Male bunnies can be neutered as soon as their testicles drop fully which can be as soon as 3 months or as late as a year. depends on each bunny. Sprocket was getting sexually frustrated so it had to be done sooner rather than later and his testicles dropped so the vet said he was okay to be neutered.
