It’s been a month since the boys were neutered and bonding session 1 is on Sunday (thank God)! They’ve taken well to the pre-bonding, and are still deciding who gets the beloved pee spot xD I think they know it’s happening soon, as now they leave each other’s sides maybe once every hour for a quick 5 minute hop around, then they go back to flopping against the cages together. I think Bombur is going to end up being the dominant one. He constantly is nuzzling his head through the bars and lowering it for grooms. Sometimes Asriel complies and will groom, and other times he turns his bum up to Bombur. It’s both a little sad to see Bombur looking for grooms and getting denied, but it’s also comical because Asriel just shakes his bum and hops away.

Problem with our current space. We have the entire upstairs of a single family home. The upstairs is being renovated, except for our room that we share with the bunnies. The bathroom is off limits as there are lots of chemicals out because there’s no closet space. The downstairs is off limits due to 3 (very loud) pugs. Can we try bonding in the room that they already share? If we absolutely have to, we can set up our x-pen in the living room and try to keep the dogs in the laundry room, but if it goes well I don’t want to have to keep the dogs penned up in a small space for so long. Any suggestions?

I also have an issue with finding a neutral space (both buns are free range, one in the bedroom and my other bun has the rest of the apartment). we were going to either try the tub or buy one of these:

this would at least create a sort of “neutral” space because neither bun has been inside of it

What a great idea! Medium or large sized though? They both are quite the explorers.

I am going to get the large one. When it’s done being used for bonding, it would be a great portable enclosure to bring anywhere! For us, field trips to the niece and nephews house!!

I went with this one because the top can come off, so you can get to them and break up any bunny quarrels that might start!

The only “problem” I see with this is if they pee on the bottom of it. Even though it says it is “waterproof material”. My bunnies are very good with litter habits, but I think I saw in another one of your posts that you have a little mess maker on your hands! I was just going to put an old sheet or blanket down on the bottom in case of any accidents.

I have had a lot of success using an x-pen to bond rabbits. You can make it a neutral area of sorts even if it’s in the same room that the rabbits have been in. Put down a sheet on the floor to mask any scents and you can even drape towels or sheets over the sides to block off any sights of the room and to create a mini neutral space. My husband and I get inside the x-pen with the bunnies, to stop any fighting or excessive humping that might happen (fortunately it never has happened), and to just be there with them in case one of the bunnies might feel a bit intimidated and need a little comfort. That portable playpen on Amazon would likely work nicely for bonding, but you wouldn’t have room for any people in there, just room for the 2 bunnies.
