My boys were neutered a week ago yesterday. Both appeared to be doing just fine. Eating, drinking, getting restless in their cages. The past day or two I’ve noticed Bombur has been having tiny poops, and will hardly touch his hay or pellets, but will still eat greens. He’s also drinking a lot. I checked his site last night and this morning, and the swelling seems to have gone down? One of his testicles seems like it’s filled with blood though. It’s really dark red, almost blackish. There’s no foul odor though. The vet scheduled their follow ups for the 6th of August, but I feel like Bombur should go sooner.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, as I’m a worry wart with my babies.

I think you should call your vet and ask. It can happen that blood leaks into the scrotal sac and create a dark hematoma. Black color is always an observandum though, so I’d call. They might want to have a look.

It doesn’t look crazy bad, but there’s some redness and sth that could be pus, so I’d call the vet. Maybe you could email them the picture.

I called the vet and emailed them the photo. She says it looks normal, but wants him to come in today to check anyways. It was just so concerning because Asriel’s neuter has healed very well. You can’t even tell he was neutered except for a small red dot on the side of each testicle. That could also be the Sulfatrim at work.

After seeing the pic, it looks a little crusty and could be some pus there, definitely take him for a follow up appointment as soon as you can..

It might just need to be cleaned up by the vet.. hope it’s not the start of infection xx

Yeah… it looks like a bit of crusted discharge. Defo have your vet clean, examine, and maybe try a different antibiotic (your boys got some, right?). If they got oral, maybe try an ointment form too in addition to the oral.

They gave me a Metcam for both, amd only Asriel got the Sulfatrim because he opened his site while at the vet. Bombur loves medicine time, so he’d be no problem taking an antibiotic. The vet squeezed him in at 3:30, so I’ll update after

Oh, weird. I thought they’d both be prescribed a week’s worth. No worries if you’re seeing your vet, though

Bombur is at the very start of an infection at his site. So I caught it just in time. The infection was also starting to cause stasis. Poor little guy. The vet gave Sulfatrim to take twice a day until the follow up on August 6th, and has to take Critical Care twice a day. She said he should be bouncing around again in a few days!

T&M Bombur has healed nicely! No sign of infection left and 3 more days on the Sulfatrim. He’s also been eating normally again. ☺

Yay for Bombur! With that name, he should eat. (And perhaps grow a very long, red beard.)
