My rabbit stopped eating on Saturday night and on Sunday I realize that he was quite a far Jake. From that point I took his temperature and it was at 96°. We took him to the vet ER and they told us that he may not live through the night. Due to finances we could not afford an x-ray or blood work so we took him home and put them on a heating pad to get his temperature up. We then started feeding him critical care through a syringe which she did not like about we force them to eat as much as he could so he was getting nutrients. It is been two days now and his temperature is back to 101 and his poops are still darker and a little small but he is now pooping more. He started eating a little bit of hay here yesterday and is continuing to eat a little bit a hair day and drinking water. He is not acting more like himself and is running around and being more responsive. My only concern is that we still do not know what was wrong with him and I’m just wondering if a rabbit can just kind of get better on its own and continue to stay stable or should I be concerned that he will go back down hill and get worse again? I have never had him him act like this before so it is concerning to me that there is some underlying problem. That’s far he’s doing much better and I was just curious if anyone else has had a rabbit that was sick and got better within a few days and continue to stay better and not get sick again?

Bouts of unhealthy behaviors… the only circumstance that comes to mind is gassy-ness/bloating, but I’ve never heard of a case that lasted so long. Also, there’s a typo in your entry, so I’m unsure what you realized on Sunday, but regardless, a period of not eating for a bit is worrisome. If it was just Saturday night, that’s much less disconcerting than Saturday night, plus Sunday.

Rather than going to a vet ER, can you get a general vet check-up somewhere for a lesser price? While it’s great he’s doing better, the fact that he stopped eating for several hours is a bit concerning.

A bunny can absolutely get a bout of tummy trouble, come out of it and stay healthy. Its not uncommon when a bun molts f ex. Stress can also spark a gut slowdown. A ppoorly bun tends to get hypothermic, and hypotherma causes the symptoms to worsen further. Many buns can be perked up with a heating pad, fluids and Critical Care until they start eating on their own again.

Sometimes a minor gut slowdown causes gas to form in the gut, and that hurts if it can’t escape. The bun stops eating, sits hunched up or presses its belly against the floor almost like it was doing push-ups.. A standard first aid measure is to give 1 ml of baby gas drops (simethicone). It’s ok to give on suspicion of gas according to Medirabbit, and surprisingly often it turns a bun around in 20-30 minutes. It’s good for all bun owners to keep in the first aid kit.

If your bun gets repeated tummy trouble, you should start thinking about causes.
You will of course need to keep a rather close eye on him for the next few days or so. Put fresh litter in the litter box often so you can keep track of amount, size and consistency of poop. You should make sure he eats and drinks normal amounts. It’s especially important that he eats hay.

We took him to the vet on Monday after seeing the er vet on Sunday. The vet could not find any problems from examination unless X-rays or blood work was to be done. I’m glad to know we could try to give baby gas drops even if we are not 100% if they help or not. So far his temp has been stable at 101 and is staying active and more alert. I am hoping he is past what was going on with him! We have been keeping a close eye and checking his litter, water and hay consumption

I’m glad to hear he’s doing better! 101 F is a good temp, I’m glad you can monitor that at home.
