My bunny just ate 3/4 of a medium heart-leaf philodendron. I’ve read that it’s toxic to bunnies, and it’/ toxic levels are from mild to moderate. I don’t know what to do, shall i take him to the vet?! I’m freaking out and this isn’t the first time he ate it, he took a few nibbles before. Please, please can someone help me!

Philodendron leaves contain very sharp oxalate chrystals that can embed in the mucosa of the mouth and GI tract. This is very painful and can cause swelling and nausea. How does your bun seem? Is he willing to take a treat? Do you see drooling or any type of pain reaction?

Here are the symptoms in humans: Intense burning sensation of the mouth, throat, lips and tongue; excessive drooling, choking and swelling of the throat, inability or difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). The mechanisms responsible for these symptoms would be the same in a rabbit. Ingestion can also cause irritation further down in the esophagus and stomach.

We have had reports of buns eating philodendron without reacting to it. The amount of chrystals probably varies between plants and individual leaves.

You could call your vet and ask if they want you to come in.
