I got my rabbit (lily) from the shelter about 6 months ago and she was doing wonderful. I’ve been noticing crusty green and yellow snot on the fur around her nose occasionally with a runny nose. I’ve never heard her sneeze but she snores in her sleep. This has been going on for a little while now and I haven’t taken her to the vet yet because all the symptoms go away for weeks then it starts over again. Her eyes can get a bit runny as well. My other rabbit has zero signs of illness and seems to be super healthy and they always are in contact with each other. I was thinking she may be allergic to something but green colored snot is usually a sign of something more serious. Lily is eating and drinking normally and her poops seem to be normal as well. Unlike my other rabbit whom I know is 1 years old, I have noticed is that lily doesn’t play or binky around and hasn’t since the day I got her. I was told she was one years old at the shelter but that was just their guesstimate. I’m thinking she may be a little older, and I was also told lily came from a humane investigation where someone was hoarding about 30 rabbits. Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on with her?

I say a vet visit may be in order. It would eliminate the guessing you are going through as well as give you a clear answer and direction to go into. Especially with 2 buns it’s safer to just go to a vet when in doubt.

I think she has a upper respiratory infection that her immune defense is keeping somewhat in check, but not completely. Practically all rabbits have Pasteurella bacteria in their nasal cavities, and in most rabbits these bacteria don’t cause any harm. But in some rabbits, in certain circumstances, the bacteria can start to multiply more than they should, and the rabbits shows symptoms like white or greenish-colored snot. Your other rabbit most likely has the same bacteria, but his body is better at controlling them.

I think a vet visit is due. A course of antibiotics could help her fight this. Untreated, an upper respiratory infection can spread to the ears or the lungs. That’s something you want to avoid.

She’s has an appointment to go to the vet on the first of next month since that was the earliest appointment available. I’m just trying to get an idea of what I should be expecting when I take her. Thank you!
