Sprocket is 3 months old now. The vet said to give him alfalfa for the first 6 months. Now I took that as that’s all he is allowed to eat. So he has been eating unlimited hay and I use pellets as treats once or twice a week.

Now I’ve been noticing that on occasion his pee seems chalky. He is peeing lots and and drinking a good amount but not worrying amounts.i know Rookie would get a thicker pee when I gave him alfalfa as treats or when I just really wanted him to eat some hay….

Is this something I should worry about with Sprocket? Or am I just paranoid due to recent events? I might call the vet tomorrow.

Also can I give him some veggies at 3 months or is he still too young?

He should be given unlimited pellets as to help him grow and get the proper nutrients for a young bunny. I started my boys of with greens around 3 months, and they handled it well. Start off slowly. Give one green for a few days to a week, to see how Spocket handles it, then give him another one after that time period. For hay, you don’t have to necessarily give only alfalfa. My boys were both fussy and only eat oat hay. They don’t mind timothy, but they don’t eat it as much. Orchard hay is good to try. You could even give your bun one of the different Oxbow blends and see what he thinks. But you definitely should be giving him unlimited pellets as a young bun.

Occasional chalky pee can be normal. That’s just excess calcium being excreted. It’s normally advised for bunnies under 6 months of age to have unlimited pellets, usually alfalfa pellets, but you shouldn’t overfeed and keep filling the bowl if it gets emptied quickly. So in reality, the pellets should be limited somewhat. Since he is eating alfalfa hay, you could start giving him some timothy based pellets along with his alfalfa pellets, or you could start mixing in some of the grass hays.

At 3 months, he can start having some veggies. Start slowly. Pick one veggie, and give that for a few days, then try another one every few days or once a week. If you click on the BUNNY INFO link at the top of the page, there are 2 articles regarding veggies and fruits, with lists of ones that can be given daily, while others should be more limited.
