My rabbit started molting last week. I knew this was a normal process, especially at around 4 months (she’ll be 4 months next weekend). However, I was doing some research about “Healthy Molting”, and most articles I found mentioned that molting is supposed to start at the head and moves it’s way back. Luna started molting at her rear, and her head hasn’t molted at all. She seems healthy and happy, but now I’m worried she isn’t healthy because of the way she’s shedding. I’m probably overreacting, but wanted some opinions!

I sometimes only really notice heavy shedding towards my buns’ bums. I think as long as there is no flakey skin or scabbing you are probably fine.

Bert always seems to moult bum first, and takes an age to finish it too! He’s very furry and seems to be fluffing away for a good month when the weather changes. I think every bun is different – if her behaviour changes and she seems uncomfortable that’s when I would worry

Bam tends to start molting on his back. Latest molt started about a month ago and it’s not until now he’s molting on his head and face.

As others have said, if the skin is smooth, without any crust, and there’s not a lot of dandruff-like skinflakes, it’s a normal molt.

I never notice any real pattern to my bun’s molting. It’s just chunks all over. My Mini-Rex used to get more of a pattern that started at his bum.
