Wilbur crossed the rainbow bridge to join Totoro this evening. Since her diagnosis of chronic heart failure a few weeks ago Wilbur appeared to be doing better. The vet had told me there wouldn’t be any cure and that she could go at anytime but I was feeling like she’d be around for longer. The diuretics started clearing up her edema and her bottom healed up. Wilbur became more active again, she even started following Figment out on his exploration adventures. She spent today cuddling with Fig and eating her favorite foods, alfalfa hay and fresh basil. Everything seemed fine at dinner time but later on I found her breathing heavily and laying in an odd position. Within moments it was clear she was experiencing a heart attack. Within a minute or so she passed away in my arms with Fig licking her head. I won’t go into details but it’s very hard to watch a rabbit die and know that there is nothing that can be done but hope that they go as painlessly as possible. It was very disturbing knowing exactly what was happening on a physiological level (I’m in nursing school).  Fig stood by her side for probably 30 minutes afterwards grooming her. I cannot believe that after losing Totoro just a few months ago that yet another rabbit has passed. I feel absolutely crushed.

Oh hun, I am so sorry.
I know what you mean, about holding a rabbit and seeing them pass away. xx It really is a gift to do that for them though, but so hard to take on emotionally.
You are left feeling so helpless..

I think it is so good that she had a period there before her final day, that she improved and was feeling better. Hold on to that.

It is so sweet that Figment groomed her, saying his goodbye. I hope he will do well and be a comfort to you.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. This made me cry. It is truly heartbreaking….I know the pain of losing such a beloved friend. But how wonderful it was that she passed away with her loving human and bunny friend by her side.

Im so sorry for your loss, so soon after another is just harrowing.

If you can, try to take solace in the fact that she clearly has a wonderful pain free last day, and was surrounded by love when she did pass away.

Wilbur was a strong bun and put up a good fight after her diagnosis. I know you’ve been through a tough time with her treatment, and now her loss, but you gave her such great care and love for the time she was with you. I hope you and Fig can comfort each other in her absence.
