Hello everyone. Pomegranate had her spay today, which apparently went well. She’s been home for about 3 hours and I’m a bit concerned. I haven’t been able to get her to eat anything besides a little bit of banana, and because she won’t open her mouth I’ve only been able to give her about half her dose of metacam on pieces of banana. Her temperature keeps dropping, so I’ve had to keep her on my lap with a blanket around us for a couple of hours (in July… What we do for our buns!). She’s sitting with a hot water bottle now and her temperature has held for the last 15 mins or so at least (it dropped pretty immediately when she left my lap before). She’s given me 4 or 5 poops and one wee, but she hasn’t drunk since she got home and she’s turning her head away from coriander (her absolute favourite).

So, in your experience, does this all sound OK or should I be more worried?

I don’t have experience but from what I’ve heard, but you’re doing right in monitoring her temperature and keeping her warm. Is calling your vet an option to get an opinion/ did you vet talk to you about what to expect?

It is not unusual for them not to want to eat the first night.

Did they give her a long lasting pain med at the clinic or were you instructed to give oral metacam the 1st night?
What is the strength and dose of metacam?

Getting her warmed up is great.

I found my girls didn’t want to drink either, or rather, didn’t want to move! Once I put a water bowl right next to them they were more inclined to drink.

That Pomegranate had pooped and wee’d is fantastic. Her not wanting veggies is not too concerning. She may be still feeling woozy or nauseous.
Did she eat before she went in for the procedure?

            Healing {{{vibes}}} for your girl!

Thanks for the replies, she’s doing fine now Was just being a bit paranoid on Friday evening, of course!

She did have a long lasting injection at the vet, and I was also told to give her the first dose of metacam that evening. She’s been taking all her doses perfectly since then, and wolfed down her pellets this morning, so almost back to her normal self!

Glad to hear she is fine! Sounds like the exact situation that I was in with my bun a few weeks ago! I was worried because she wouldn’t take the first metacam dose and was also not drinking. We didn’t have any temperature issues luckily. By the next day she was eating better and gobbled up the metacam like candy! By day 3 she was chewing cage bars and begging desperately to be let out! If you think about it, it’s actually amazing how quickly they bounce back from such an invasive surgery. If I had the same performed, I probably wouldn’t move for a week! lol

Glad to hear she is doing better, Juliet didn’t want to move, eat, drink the day she was spayed. Because it is a more invasive surgery, they feel like poop for a day or two. Happy to hear she is better.
