My bunny Baobao is male, Lionhead mixed with Himalayan, 3 months old. I live in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City.

He has started sneezing a few days ago. I didn’t recognize that they were sneezes at first because his sneezes were very gentle. But yesterday I noticed his nose looking like in the pictures below. It looks like something is inflamed? And his nose is very damp. It’s not really runny, but as you can see there’s enough water leaking out to make it noticeably damp to the touch. I’m not sure this is just normal rabbit nose or something has actually gone wrong.

Aside from his nose, everything else seems normal. He loves to eat and run around. Droppings are round and normal size, normal amount of droppings. But his pee has been getting cloudier. This gets me really worried.

I feed him about 30g of alfalfa pellets, divided into 3 times a day. The rest of the day is unlimited alfalfa and timothy hay.

Vets for indoor rabbits are hard to reach in this area. They usually only serve large meat rabbit farms. But I can search for medicine to buy and take my bunny to the vets to ask them to inject it if injection is required.

Please can anyone give me some advice on possible cause and treatment for the nose and pee problem? I’m grateful for your help. I’m really worried about him.

It not too inflammed, I don’t think. A wet nose is not ideal, but it can happen when they’re breathing a bit faster then normal or if the weather has heated up. Has it been getting warmer?

Have you been using any new hay or litter that seems dustier? Or the litter is scented?

Cloudy pee is not anything to worry about. You want to see some cloudiness in rabbit pee. The get rid of calcium they didn’t need this way. Its not unusal to sometimes see more, especially if they are getting more in the diet. They just pee out anything the body doesn’t use.

            Dear Jerseygirl,

Thank you very much for your reply!! Yes it has been getting pretty warm and humid in my area. It’s currently the rainy season. After your suggestion I have watched and realized that Baobao seems to be intentionally looking for a cool surface to lay down on. So temperature is probably playing a big part here.

I use wood pellets and hay for his litter. Nothing artificially scented. Possibly when the wood pellets absorb water and soften out, some small bits were able to become airborn when Baobao jumps around? I will watch out for this and make appropriate adjustments if that’s the case.

For Baobao’s food, I use DrBunny’s Feed for Young Rabbit DR130. The calcium amount listed on the package is 0.5% – 1.2%. It’s probably a normal amount?

Still, I’m thinking of trying out a different brand next month. There’s a new pet supply store opened recently in my city, they’ll probably carry more rabbit feed brands.

Aside from the occasional cloudiness, his pee is a good yellow color I think. Not too light and not dark.

Again, thank you very much! Your reply has put my anxiety at ease. I’ll try out some changes as suggested to see if they can improve his nose.

They look like good pellets for a young bunny.

This is what Wick’s nose has always looked like because he had an upper respiratory infection, and now that that’s done, he still gets a runny nose occasionally from hay.

It could be allergies, or it could be the sign of a developing infection. I’m only familiar with these two possibilities for this symptom since that’s what Wick has gone through, so it’s possible it’s something else as well. If it is a URI, the sneezing may get worse and more frequent, and the runny-ness will become more like human snot, and go from clear to potentially white. If the sneezing gets progressively worse and so does the nasal discharge, I’d recommend going to the vet. The earlier you fight the infection, the easier it will be to get rid of it.

Some times when I give him an especially dusty portion from a hay bag, Wick will sneeze a bit throughout the day. It also happens when it gets stuffy in the living room/bedroom because of the hot weather/humidity outside and a lack of dusting and vacuuming. These factors could spark a surge in sneezing as well.

                  Hi Wick,

After reading your comment I got worried and spent days to search for a vet again. I finally found one. Brought Bao to him, and indeed the vet said he had a slight case of URI. Bao was given a few shots. It looks like his nose has improved, but I still occasionally hear strange huffy sounds when I pet him (only when my ear is very close to his nose). I’m thinking of buying a nose drop for him. Do you think a nose drop would help? Do you have recommendation for which type to get?

Thank you very much for sharing your experience! I’m new at this so every bit of information helps me a lot.

I’m glad the cause was found! I never used a nose drop or anything, but at times when his nose was too stuffed or clogged in a way that he couldn’t quite get it, I’d use a fresh soft towel corner and slightly brush the nostril to get the snot out. Done gently, as the nasal passages are sensitive. Not going in the nose, just a millimeter, if even. Always use a new towel, and I followed it with cleaning his nose with a damp towel, then drying it with a new dry towel. It was a three towel process so I wouldn’t make the bacteria worse.

It’s also important to keep your rabbits water fresh and clean(bowl included). Since rabbits use their saliva to clean themselves, you want the water to be clean so as it passes the nose, it doesn’t cause irritation. The same logic for litter box and hutch environments, as rabbit paw fur will capture a lot. You don’t need to become a cleaning fanatic, but just do regular cleaning, being a bit more cognizant of doing it well.

In terms of the huffy sound, Wick did make more sound with his stuffy nose. Primarily, when you’d pet him and put some pressure down on his head down his neck to his spine, the pressure would cause air to go through the nose and actually make a sound, haha.

Wick became really bonded with me, and part of it was me comforting him during his treatment, including many nose wipes, constantly saying bless you, and also patting him a bit every time he had a hard sneeze or a sneeze attack. Aside from usual medical precautions, I’d say just be there to support your bun as treatment goes! Some rabbits want nothing to do with you while they’re uncomfortable, but if you think your rabbit would appreciate your presence and occasional pet, do so! Always with clean hands.

With URIs, it’s important to get all of it so it doesn’t come back. Don’t be completely panicked if symptoms start coming back, because ordinarily URIs need to be treated with a run of an antibiotic for a few weeks. If you caught it early, perhaps the shots did it, but if you see symptoms reemerge, don’t hesitate to let your vet know!

With Wick, it was the second medication, with an addition of a third which ended up being the correct cocktail to kill his uri. It should be noted that Wick’s was especially resilient and pesky, which my vet admitted had never witnessed before, but he’s fine now!

                        Hi Wick(‘s Parent xD),

Thank you for your suggestions! I do tend to freak out a bit when my bun display anything out of ordinary, even though I don’t have enough experience to tell what normal is either haha.

A few days after the shot, Bao Bao has been doing much better. His nose has dried up and the sneezing has somewhat subsided. He’s back to his mission of investigating and licking everything in sight including me. I did make changes to his litter bed and filter the hay before feeding him to reduce dust. He’s way more active now than before.

Thank you Jerseygirl and Wick, I really truly appreciate your help. It’s hard to find people with such dedications and gentleness towards pet bunnies in my area. You totally made my day!
