We were painting the house last week and now my 3 year old bunny is tilting his head slightly to the right. He’s generally healthy and stays indoor and we made sure we used water based paint. When I looked up bunny head tilts I was petrified to learn that it could mean some neurological problem. I’ve booked a vet appointment for tomorrow but wanted to ask some questions here anyway. For those whose bunny’s have suffered head tilt, how serious is it? Also, his head isn’t constantly tilted (I. E. He can straighten it but now is mainly keeping it tilted, is this just him behaving strange or an actual head tilt). Any help/advice/knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks, I’m just really worried…

The most common causes for head tilt are inner ear infection, and a protozoan infection known as E. cuniculi. E.c. can be harder to treat but the earlier you treat it the greater success you have, as the tilt progressively gets worse otherwise and is accompanied by other balance issues. Inner ear infections are a straightforward fix with antibiotics and the tilt will go away with the infection. Sometimes with E.c. if the tilt has gone on too long then the head can always remain partly or strongly tilted.
