i think this would be an okay place to put this.

anyway, i was wondering if anyone managed to make their own hay box. by hay box, i don’t mean hay rack – that’s actually why i’m asking this here. every time i look for ideas on google, i get DIY hay rack ideas. by hay box i mean a tall or wide box of some sort to store large amounts of hay. i’ve really only seen one once or twice, but it would be extremely helpful thing to have if i convinced my parents to start getting bales of hay from a local farmer or similar place rather than tiny bags of it from Walmart. i wouldn’t have a place to store a huge bag of hay other than my garage – no thanks, i’d rather not have to go down there twice a day!

have any of you made your own hay boxes before? do you still use it? what materials did you use? i’m pretty sure i could make one using a large shipping box, but i’m positive that more handy rabbit owners could make one using wood materials.

I haven’t but the best logistics would be to have a deep container (like Ikea’s ones for laundry) somewhere handy and the rest of the bale in a trunk or something in the garage. So you can make the trip only once a week or so

sounds good to me. i think a tall garbage bin would probably work fine, actually. i can find one just about anywhere.

I haven’t made my own, but I did repurpose a second hand wooden blanket box/toy chest for storing my hay bale. I added a foam seal around the lid to prevent bugs getting in and added some small circular air vents on three sides so that the hay could still breathe easily.

sounds like it would work really well!

I took some pics. Ideally I would like a box that’s slightly bigger because when I buy a new bale, I have to have the box completely emptied, and even then I have to remove one flake from the bale to fit it into the box. Just couldn’t afford a bigger one at the time

One of the air vents. I have one on each end, and I’m pretty sure I have two on the back.

looks nice, but i can see why it being so small could be a bit frustrating.
where’d you get the little air vents? do you remember how much the box costed?
i think i’ve already found a different option, but i’m still curious.

Im definitely looking to do something like Azerane has. I had a garden storage box which lasted well for number of years, but being plastic and thin, it warped a bit. And the mice where able to get into it this year. I want to use something more solid.

Sunny, Id check out trying to get a box like secondhand. Craiglist, freecycle, garage sales…

Search terms like storage chest, blanket box, toy box etc

Oh, and wooden shipping crates too. You might know of a local company that has large items shipped to them in boxes like that.

i’ll be sure to do that. it sounds much more secure compared to a few other options i have.

A garbage bin fits a bale of hay pretty well usually. Otherwise if you don’t mind spending a bit of money once off you can look at saddleries or online to buy a hay carry bag – they exist for horse owners who are going to a weekend show or taking multiple horses to a show. It’s basically a hay bale sized bag with handles.

Personally when I want to transport a bale of hay in my car I keep it in an old quilt cover.

those are also some pretty good ideas. i guess i’ll see what i can do.

I got the air vents from a hardware store like home depot, they were only a few dollars for a pack of 2. I’m not sure how much I paid for the box, I bought it from gumtree secondhand, in the range of $30-50 I think. One a little larger would also be good because it would contain the mess a little more when I pull hay from the bale because it wouldn’t fall outside the box as much, it would fall inside the box either side of the bale. It still works great though, and I love having solid storage like this and not having to worry about bugs or mice.

i’d deal with it being too small. it sounds like it works really well despite that.

hopefully i don’t have to spend too much money, but i will if it means i have a good place to store my hay!

Absolutely And I just use a plastic storage tub for the flake that doesn’t fit and use that up first before I start on the bale in the box.
