I was petting Bombur tonight when I noticed it felt like he had a rash. When I got a close look I noticed a brown bump and the area around it was pink and covered with dandruff. Any ideas what this could be? It doesn’t seem to hurt him or itch, but I just want to make sure it’s not a big deal.

Sounds like possibly a scab or even fur mites…are the dandruff moving around?
Might be worth a vet visit to be safe.

The dandruff doesn’t seem to be moving around, but then again, now that Bombur knows I’m trying to look or something he won’t sit still. He doesn’t have any hair loss patches or bald spots, but this morning small tufts of hair seemed to come off him when I pet him.

It could perhaps be fur mites, not all fur mites move. The brown bump is not consistent though, the scabs furmites cause are as a rule yellow/white. Is the brown bump like a scabbed over sore or more like a wart or mole?

It looked very much like a mole. My two buns fought almost a month ago, and Bombur did get the brunt of it. We were finding scabs for the next 2 weeks afterwards. Would a scab last almost a month? The one on his belly is still there, but that seems like it’ll never fade.

Scabs can take quite a long time, so this could still be a scab from the fight. I’d just observe it to see where it’s going. If it gets bigger, starts to leak fluid or if he seems unduly bothered, a vet visit would be the best thing. But if it’s just a slow healing scab, it will dry up and fall off even if it takes time. Buns can get a bit of dandruff when they are shedding. With mites, clumps of fur as a rule come out with dandruff/flakiness plus the skin sort of thickens locally. Mites also spread outwards so the affected area gets bigger. It’s typically located between the shoulder blades or at the base of the tail.

It’s nothing like that, thank goodness. He’s slowly shedding since we brought him home and were told they were shedding their baby coats. Like I said, it doesn’t seem to bother him. There’s no flakiness, hair loss, or thick skin. Just the one brown spot on his shoulder.
