I just got my rabbit yesterday and couldn’t be happier but like a mom with a newborn, I’m easily worried. Phoebe, my 12 week old rex rabbit, isn’t eating her pellets. She’s eating her hay and drinking plenty of water but won’t touch her pellets. It’s the same type of pellets she was eating before I got her and it’s even in the same type of bowl but she won’t eat it! Her droppings seem normal so I’m pretty sure she’s feeling okay but I’m still worried. What should I do, is this reason for concern?

It’s really great she is eating her hay! I wouldn’t be to concerned just yet that she’s refusing the pellets. It won’t hurt her. I think just give it some time. Some rabbits, when they come home, wont want to eat at all for the 1st day. You could always scatter some on the floor or in the hay and see if she takes an interest.

With the pellets, it’s the same brand she was having but you have new bag? Or you got some of the actual feed from the place you got her from? I ask because with some brands, there is an adult and junior food that can easily be confused. Also, some rabbit just get fussy about new bags of the same stuff! But they come around.

Hi Madi G. – I just got our little mini rex a week and half ago too (new bunny mom like you) and I noticed the first couple of days he wasn’t eating his pellets either. Drank his water and would eat hay though. But a few days in he started eating his pellets like a champ and devours them now. I think it just took him a couple of days to settle in.

And I was giving a half and half mixture of the brand of pellets he was on before we got him (breeder gave us a bag) and the Oxbow pellets we bought.

I just wanted to say that I was scanning the forum and accidentally read this title as ‘Question about eating rabbits’ and I was like haha!

It’s great that she’s eating hay.. as others have said give it some time and double check that it’s exactly the same food. The hay will keep her wee system going in the mean time until she starts munching her pellets.
