my rabbit Sienna has recently started losing small tufts of fur on her ears. she seems to be itching only a tad bit more often and i don’t see nearly any wax in her ears so i’m not really sure what it could be. luckily her ears are the one thing she’ll let me examine so i can check them out pretty thoroughly. as previously mentioned, though, her ears look almost completely free of all gunk and wax. i did consider the idea that the shedding of fur on her ears was completely normal, but i don’t recall her molting around her ears in past years and she’s not currently shedding anywhere else. does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

How long has this been happening?

Where I live, my buns have (mostly?) just finished shedding aside from the odd tufts here and there. So it is possible it could be just that, however it is funny it is only from the ears. Where abouts on the ear is it (base, outside…? ) and have you personally seen the fur come out, or have you just noticed a bald spot forming?

I would consider taking her to a vet, where they could rule out any infections or some sort of mites or something… :/

Might be fleas or mites, which are easily treated with products like Advantage for kittens (NOT frontline, that stuff is toxic!!). Anyways, a vet visit is recommended so that you can be sure she needs the treatment

it’s only been happening since very recently. at the time i’m writing this it seems to be stopping? it’s very confusing, to be honest.

her shedding is weird this year. ever since i got her my parents have, as they would any summer, turned on the AC when it got too warm in the house. at first i thought that was what was stopping her from shedding this year, but then i realized that this is what they’ve done every year and in the past years i’ve had Sienna she’s shed just fine.

the fur is coming off only on the outside of her ears, but it’s coming out everywhere on the outside, so not just the base or the tips.. when i massage them i sometimes lift some of the tufts out. there aren’t any bald spots on her ears. i should also probably mention that i’ve noticed there’s a bit more wax in her ears than there was when i posted this.

if i have to i’ll bring her to the vet.

Well, we can’t tell you to go to the vet or not, you are the one that sees the bun everyday If she’s acting weird (too much scratching) or shedding weird or anything seems out of the ordinary, the best shot usually is to ring up the vet. This matter is obviously worrying you, so I’d call and ask at least for a telephonic consult

i sure am! like i said, the shedding of her ear fur is seemingly going away, but i’d still like to make sure that she doesn’t have anything. i’d also like to figure out why she hasn’t started shedding. in a little while i might have to bring her in.

i’ll be looking more into the signs and symptoms of fleas and ear mites. i’d like to find out just how likely it is that those are what’s causing this..

as previously mentioned i’ll just have to bring her to the vet if the symptoms continue.

Ive had mine occasionally molt from the rim of the ears before. It doesn’t happen very often, which is why it seems so odd when you do see it.
I saw this on the medirabbit site if it helps.
