I have read the recommended veggies on the HRS page. There are different types of lettuce on the greens list, and of course there is also the list of greens that you should give less of. My last rabbit was always given an assortment of different types of lettuce. However, here is my question. I recently adopted a new rabbit. I do not know the breed of this rabbit. I do have one breed that I feel is probably involved. When I was researching this breed, many sites said not to give them any type of lettuce or spinach. Now I know this rabbit is not entirely just this breed if at all, but I am concerned. Am I missing something?

I’m a new owner, but I’ve done a lot of research on diet and care. I have never come across anything pertaining to veggies being breed specific. From what I can tell, all rabbits should have fresh greens daily. It offers them variety and essential nutrients without being too nutrient dense, as is the case with pellets. This is why we feed limited pellets. I feed my bun 1 cup of romaine lettuce daily, along with fresh herbs such as parsley or basil, and she will occasionally get some bell pepper slices but I try not to give those daily.

Edit: I do know that you should not feed iceberg lettuce to buns. It is basically just water, so it id one to stay away from because it offers basically no nutritional value so what’s the point in giving it? Romaine and green leaf lettuce are totally fine to be given daily, from what I understand. They can have spinach but I believe I read somewhere that it should not be given daily. I will have to look again for the source I found that in.

Here’s a good resource from this site that also shows you which should be alternated and not given every day:

I’ve never come across breed-specific no-no’s in terms of veggie diet. It could be for rabbit shows, some people opt for diets which may make the rabbit’s fur or teeth look more appealing? Total guess though.

Barring differing personalities and health reasons, I think any safe veggie listed in the link BunNoob<3 provided is fine.

Thanks guys! I thought it sounded really weird, I just thought maybe after all this time I had missed something. I just don’t want to hurt him.

Romaine, curly and other medium to dark green lettuces (letti!) are fine…. but seeing as you don’t really know Ziggy’s previous diet (prob pellets or muesli in petco), i would introduce each one slowly until you’re sure it doesn’t have adverse effects on Ziggys tumtum.
