Hugo is a Dutch rabbit who’s supposedly estimated to be over a year old when I adopted him almost 2 months ago. For the first week, Hugo’s eating habits were solely based on survival – he would literally gobble down all of his pellets and consumers as much water as possible. It was really sad to see this as his eating behavior relates to his previous living environment. That habit has long passed now that Hugo realizes that he’ll have an endless supply of food and water. He now has a new habit of just consuming a majority of his food when someone is present, but I have secretly observe him take nibbles at his pellets so he isn’t starving. Hugo does eat his hay with no problem as well as drinking water. It’s just the pellets that he does this with. Does anyone have any clue as to why he may be doing this? Thank you in advance

Generally buns LOVE pellets, so it is not surprising that he gobbles them down . I use pellets as treats and Luna vacuums them out of my hand even if she has just finished eating hay/veggies.

So he is only eating his pellets when you are in the room?

I think it is social eating behavior Rabbits in the wild always eat together, and many house rabbits will eat more when their humans are nearby since they feel safer and social. I’d take it as a compliment that he has adopted you into his warren. As long as he is eating hay and drinking normally it’s not a health problem.
