I recently adopted two jersey woolies. It appears that the previous owner only brushed the top of the bunnies; as they have pretty severe mats close to their skin. I’ve been attempting to comb them out, but it is difficult when they are so close to the skin. I also don’t want to stress the bunnies out too much. Does anyone have any advice for de-matting rabbits?

Cutting stubborn mats out is easier and less stressful on your bun. But in this case, since the mats are close to their skin and are severe, I would suggest taking them to your vet so that they can get the mats out safely.

I agree that if the mats are bad the vet might need to do it. Before I adopted Maggie half her body had to be a combination of cut and shaved to get dreadlocks out (she is an angora). Right now she has a huge bald patch on her back. But it will grow back and while it does you can keep on top of combing.
