My approximately 9-week old Rex bun, Mira, seems to have trouble eating pellets. She absolutely loves them and eats them like they are treats, but that’s the problem. I know that slight changes to rabbit diets can cause serious digestive issues, so I introduced an 1/8th of a cup of juvenile rabbit pellets (Kaytee Forti-diet) on her ninth day here, and she ate them in one sitting the day after, so Saturday the 24th. This was in the morning at around 10:00. At around 1:50 I noticed her stomach was bulging and hard, but not the kind of bulging/hard you’d see with bloat. It was gas with Mira, and even with simethicone treatments she even stopped drinking and using her litterbox (but she still ate some hay). I found this strange, because my previous rabbit (and her aunt) never had trouble with pellets of the same brand or adjusting to dietary changes. Thankfully by that evening, Mira’s stomach softened back to the normal firm but not hard state, and receded. She was completely fine, drank lots of water, bounced off the walls with joy, and pooped in her litterbox. Now, I have been doing something where I only give her nine pellets a day, three for each mealtime. Even this upset her stomach a little when I re-introduced them. She had another episode with gas yesterday, but not as bad. So I stopped giving her pellets yesterday afternoon, and she has been fine since then. I have no intention of feeding her any pellets until I’m certain because she seems to do fine with the grass hays she has. I have an appointment scheduled with a vet clinic that specializes in cats and small mammals such as rabbits, chinchillas, and guinea pigs to talk to them and see what the deal is. I was wondering if anyone else has had trouble with this?

I don’t know too much about the Kaytee rabbit pellets and I’m sure someone with more knowledge will help but I know that Kaytee as a brand isn’t great. Their rat food and ferret food are both terrible and have been linked to illnesses. Has she always been eating that brand or was this a recent change? Have you tried a different pellet?
I hope the vet clears her and you figure out whats wrong.
