I have considered getting another mini rex but I have also contemplated getting a mini lop. Are there any other breeds you would recommend? What are the pros and cons of each breed?

        Thanks.

In rabbits, individual personalities are not tied to the breed so I would just try to find the rabbit you like the most! If you adopt from a shelter, you can get an adult rabbit with developed personality (I’m told it is hard to tell with babies), plus they will most likely already be spayed/neutered so it will save you vet fees!

There are a few things to consider with breeds, size obviously can be a factor. Although small rabbits also need large play areas to run and jump, just because they are small doesn’t mean they only need a small cage. Small rabbits tend to be more active than large ones, but again this is a generalization and you will find lazy dwarfs and active giants

Other things to think about are health issues associated with breeds: rexes are known to suffer from a few conditions such as sore hocks (fur on their back feet rubs off easily) and curly nails. Lops can be prone to ear infections, netherland dwarfs can have tooth issues… Its not a guarantee that these will be a problem it is just good to keep in mind when you adopt! For instance, a mini rex would need lots of soft surfaces like fleece in the habitat to protect their feet.

Most important thing is that it is healthy and you love it <3

I have adopted three different breeds from different places and loved them all. I have a havanna, Dasher, who is 4 who thinks he is king of the world and very one person bunny. He is content being alone. I adopted our lop to be his friend, that never worked. (2 males) lol. When our lop died in May with tummy complications, GI, we decided to try girls to bond with Dasher. Our Dutches came from a pet store at 9 weeks. The girls are adorable, lovey, and social. Dasher doesn’t have access to see them until after they are fixed in December. He met them once and was very happy lol. Any breed can be friends and friendly. I’d focus more on gender then am breed when looking for a buddy for your bunny?

Another thing to consider is age. The girls being so young have developing immune systems. They have been on antibiotics since week one for URI

I already have a two year old neutered male mini rex. I wanted to get him a friend. Thanks for the advice about the adopting, that never occurred to me before. But are there some specific breeds that tend to get along with other rabbits more or does it only depend on the rabbit’s personality?

It mostly depends on the rabbits personality as to who they will or wont like, so the best idea is to let your rabbit chose his own friend-speed dating can be a good indication of the right companion.

Just for a bit of perspective I have had 3 lionhead or lionhead/angorra crosses so far..not one is like the other! Not even close. One was a total dote who was mad as a brush and very easy going with other bunnies, but always looking for adventure, one is shy of people and other rabbits, and is a bit dense, one is a total diva but the cuddliest thing when it comes to humans, but a wagon with other bunnies.

I think its really just about personality! As a plus, if you are looking for a friend for your bun, many rabbit rescues will do “speed dating,” where you bring your current rabbit and test out which other buns he might get along best with. Bonding can be a lot easier if you find two that already seem compatible!

                      Rescued is the best breed

If there isnt a rescue in you area, lops tend to be cute and popular with everyone.
