My boys are finally getting fixed on July 19th, but my vet informed me they’d have to stay at the medical center for 36 hours after  the procedure. Is this normal? I’m really concerned because One of my buns is super anxious about everything, and leaving him at the vet for 36 hours without anything familiar breaks my heart. My other bun is extremely cuddly and loving, but I’d feel bad having him not see his brother for that length of time. They’re so used to seeing each other constantly and they’re so used to me and my husband. Should I find a different vet for their surgeries? Is keeping them  hoursfor 36 normal?

I’m not sure.. but all I can say is what my vets said (I’m waiting to get my male fixed) they said I should drop him off in the morning between like 8am-9am then they said they’d call at 4pm and let me know how he’s doing and that i should be able to collect him soon after that – as long as everything is okay i’m guessing.

I mean you could get a quote from somewhere else and ask what they do and see if you’re happier with that – but there’s always a chance they might need to him them in longer

That’s not the norm, no, from my experiences with my own vets and from here on BB. Most vets will keep them for most of the day until they are fully awake, eating and pooping on their own. My buns went in early morning and were picked up around supper time.

Have you asked your vet why the long stay? If it were me, I’d probably check around and see if you can find another rabbit savvy vet and see what their policy is.

It’s a little odd! I dropped Peanut off at around 8 am and collected him between 4 and 5pm that same day.

Perhaps they want to keep them in to make sure they eat and have no complications?

It sounds odd. 36 hours is a long time. I don’t quite understand what they’ll do with the buns for so long. Most vets know bunnies are sensitive to stress and being in a vet clinic is quite a stressor for a bun.

My boys were dropped off at 8 am and picked up at 4.30 pm.

Yes it does sound strange, I’ve had dogs in the past and they only stayed about the same time as rabbits 8 and a half to 9, maybe 10 hours.

My very rabbit-savvy vets keep all bunnies in overnight after a neuter/spay as a matter of course. They do it because they have nurses on site all night, so they can be monitored closely and make sure that they’re eating and drinking, and so that any problems can be spotted and solved quickly.
I felt reassured by it, as I knew by the time i brought them home they were well on their way back to being normal! That said, it wasn’t more than 24 hours that they were kept for.

All of the rabbits I’ve had spayed and neutered came home the same day as their surgery. Some surgeries were done at a vet’s office and some were done by the shelter where I adopted them, but I always picked them up in the late afternoon, the day of their surgery.

All three of my boys came home around 4 to 8 hours after drop off.
