        Hi everyone.

I’m new here (obviously) but I’ve been a lurker for quite some time.

I have a 3 year old silver marten female fixed rabbit (HONEY) who has been with us for 2 years.  She has free range of the basement and uses her litter box perfectly.

We recently rescued another female Cinnamon rabbit (THURSDAY) who is 6 months old from a bad situation and just got her fixed today. Cinnamon has always been in a rabbit cage (it sits on a table in the basement so Honey can’t go by her) and has never been free range.  We want to bond them after Thursday is healed.

I guess my question is…how do we do it when Honey has free range and the Thursday is in a cage? We don’t have a cage for Honey. Do we have to buy one for her?

        Thanks in advance.

Since Thursday just got spayed, it will be a few weeks before you can begin bonding. In a few days, after she has recovered from surgery, she will need to start getting some out of cage time for exercise every day. She will also have to get used to being free range if she is to bond with and live with Honey. You will have to put Honey somewhere else while Thursday is out for exercise, either elsewhere in the house or a different room in the basement if it has rooms. You could even put Honey in Thursday’s cage to get her used to her scent, although you don’t want her to be freaked out by being caged if she isn’t used to it. If you did put Honey in the cage, you would first have to put Thursday in a carrier, since you don’t want them meeting until you start the bonding process. To get them used to each other’s scents, you can swap out their blankets or towels or stuffed animals in the days before you start bonding.

An x-pen is a good way to bond bunnies, and it can create a neutral space even if it is placed in a room that both have been in. You can lay down a sheet or blanket or some large towels, to cover any scents that are in the flooring. You can even drape some sheets on the sides of the pen to block out the rest of the room.

I have used an x-pen with great success to bond bunnies. My husband and I get in the pen with them, to stop any fighting or excess humping. Some scuffling and humping is normal. Start out with a few minutes the first day and increase the time each day.
