I got my rabbit, Lola, spayed yesterday and she has been acting strangely. Today I finally got her to eat and drink a little but she is still obviously in pain. My vets office is an hour away so I was just wondering the best way to take care of her and if there is anything I can do to help with the pain? (PS she’s not in a lot of pain or else I would definitely take her to the vet, shes just uncomfortable and not up to her regular self)

Well a spay is a very invasive surgery so she’s bound to be a little unlike herself. Does she have pain meds?

No pain meds were given, she seems to be doing fine now but Im worried about her incision. I have to keep stopping her from licking down there and she wont let me even go near it and I dont know how to check it

If she is eating and drinking and has produced at least some poop, it’s within the scope of normal to be feeling under the weather after a spay. As Sarah says, a spay is a pretty big procedure.

Your vet ought to have sent pain meds home with her, nowadays that should be standard practice. Could you call your vet and ask for a prescription? Maybe they can phone it in to a nearby pharmacy?

What you can do is try to keep her comfortably warm, offer her fragrant herb, if you can get willow that’s great because it contains a natural painkiller (salicylic acid). Serve her water in a bowl instead of in a bottle and keep her company. She probably doesn’t want direct interaction but being in the same room as her human is comforting.

She must keep eating, if she won’t, you need to syringe feed her. Whatever she chooses to eat is ok for now, she can have treats like fruit if she wants to.

Thank you, Ill try to get some willow for her! Shes doing so much better now, shes practically inhaling food and is even back to her water bottle with no problem. Im just being an over bearing mother lol. Shes even back to licking me and when I sit outside her cage she’ll try to get as close to me as possible so at least she doesnt hate me for taking her to the vet

It’s great that she’s eating. Is she pooping? I really feel like she should have pain meds tho…

I’m glad she’s perked up considerably! Pooping is really important though, as Sarah says. Have you seen poop?
