Currently in Ireland we are experiencing a heatwave. My apartment has a lot of glass windows and is south facing so it gets a LOT of sun. Ireland also doesn’t really do air conditioning so I have nothing like that. I tried everything to keep Tony relaxed and cool; frozen water bottles to lie beside, fans, spritzing him occasionally, daily grooming, drawing the curtains when I’m not there and opening windows when I am. I even froze my pizza stone and put in under his fleece so he’d have a cool place to lie down. However, it seems it wasn’t enough and my little bun got quite unhappy and stressed out. He was a bit iffy with his food a couple of times but some tummy rubs and a bit of juice in his water seemed to help until last night when I got home from work and saw he hadn’t eaten his breakfast or pooped much. He’d also peed on the carpet which isn’t little him.

I brought him to the emergency vet and he was given motility drugs, fluids, pain relief, and critical care. She told me to bring him in to the regular vet again in the morning if there was no improvement, so when I woke up to an empty litter tray I took him to our regular vet. He can’t find anything wrong (like teeth issues etc) so he agrees it’s likely from the stress of the heatwave. Tony got more fluids, more motility drugs, more critical care, and some antibiotics too. He also had a high temperature so he was given some anti inflammatories to try to bring it down and relieve any pain.

I’ve been syringe feeding him CC every couple of hours all day but the last round he wouldn’t even swallow. I have another appointment for him in the morning, and he’s to get another dose of medicine this evening, but I’m very worried. He did a small amount of poops on the way to the vets this morning but he has only dropped a total of four individual poop pellets since then. Ive also given him a few tummy massages but he’s kind of avoiding me because he now thinks I’m just going to stick things in his mouth (or butt lol). On the advice of the emergency vet, I kept him in his cage but he’s miserable so I’ve let him out to run around. He’s hiding in his favorite spot behind the couch, and I’ve left a bowl of apple-water and a big pile of hay and tasty greens there to see if he feels a bit more comfortable eating now that he’s free.

This morning he seemed in a good mood when I let him out of the cage to get ready for the vet, leaping on the couch and everything so I’m hoping not being locked up will help. I’m extremely distressed about it all, not to mention exhausted from being up all night (and broke! Those emergency vet fees are no joke!).

Anyone got any advice or suggestions or literally anything that will make me feel better

Aww poor thing! I saw on here someone posted about putting ice cubes in their buns water to cool it down. Do you have a fan you could run for little Tony? (although it my be tricky to come up with a setup where he is not around exposed wires). I’m so sorry to hear that! I’ve seen other people on here outside of the U.S also posting about the heat being a problem. I live in Florida in the U.S. and luckily here A/C is pretty much a basic necessity. Without it I’d die XD summer here is brutal…I know that vet bill is definitely no fun!! ….if it makes you feel any better though, my A/C bill has gone up by about $50 a month since I got bun. I used to leave my apartment on 80 degrees F when I wasn’t home because I didn’t need the A/C running all day with no one there. But with bun home all day I leave it at a cool 76 F for her…ouch right in the utility bill though!

I have a fan set up on a bookshelf with the wire behind so he can’t get it and I did try the ice cube thing but he did not like it and was avoiding the water until it melted so I stopped that because he needs the fluids. Luckily the heatwave seems to be coming to an end now, so maybe he’ll relax a bit tonight and I’ll finally see some poop ?

We’re moving next week so I really don’t know what to do. He’s already so sick and stressed. I’m really hoping he’ll be back to normal by the weekend because I REALLY don’t want to add the stress of moving on top of everything else he’s dealing with. I’m rubbing his tummy a lot and managed to get him to eat a couple of little gem lettuce leaves, and he does seem a bit calmer so I’m really hopeful that things will get better. It’s been an awful couple of days and I’m extremely upset and worried.

It really is awful to have a stasis bun. That he was in a good mood this morning and even leapt on the sofa sounds very promising. It’s good if he can be made to move around, it helps the getting the intestines to move. I don’t quite understand why the vet ordered cage rest, maybe so you can keep a very close eye and have no trouble catching him for meds.

Maybe you could mix the CC with something yummy, like baby fruit or berry puree. If he’s figthing his CC and meds it’s actually a good sign, although very inconvenient for you.

Many many many vibes for little (((((Tony)))))

The emergency animal clinic near me is attached to the vet College, so the vets there are newly qualified people gaining some experience. She was lovely and seemed to know her stuff but she definitely wasn’t rabbit savvy. She was actually allergic to rabbits and kept sneezing lol! I think sick dogs and cats were what she was thinking when she ordered cage rest, but our regular rabbit specialist vet gave him a much better look over this morning and was fine with him running free. He seems in a better mood now he’s out and about. I’ve spied another two or three tiny sticky pellets so hopefully after his next dose of medicine and CC I’ll get some real poop. He has another appointment in the morning with our regular vet so I’m hoping he’ll be a bit better by then.

He only really moves when I go near him because he knows he’s getting force-fed, but even still that running away from me has to be a positive sign! I’ve been rubbing his tummy a lot too which he seems to like. I’m exhausted and extremely stressed out but I literally don’t care about anything else but him right now.

It is a good sign that he tries to run away from you. A very poorly bun will just sink to the floor and refuse to move.

I hope you can get at least some sleep tonight. (((((Tony)))))

Managed to get him to eat a tiny bit of lettuce and I saw half a dozen sticky hard little pellets, so I’m feeling a bit better. It’s nearly midnight but I’m pouring myself a large glass of wine and ordering Chinese food. I didn’t want to until I felt confident that he would be okay until the morning, because I would need to drive if he had to go to the emergency again, but a little bit of lettuce and a few poops make me think I’m okay for tonight. Right?

Stasis is so stressful! Sounds like he is getting there and you are doing the right things!…. the lady at our rabbit rescue says that getting bunnies out of stasis is like trying to jump start a train, so keep up what you’re doing! Keep pushing fiber and water! I second that him fighting you is good, as it means he is feeling OK. That tough love approach is necessary.

You might try adding some pureed pumpkin to his CC. Some bunnies like the taste more that way, and it adds fiber and water. Mixing it to be slightly more runny than the package instructions can also help them swallow it (and helps with hydration). About the consistency of pancake batter is usually good.

My local rabbit rescue coordinator showed me some acupressure points near the spine that you can massage to help stimulate things. I’ve had some success with them when I was taking care of a very sick bunny with GI issues. The points are on the sides of the spine,  between the shoulders and hind legs, more towards the hind legs, near the highest part of the back. I basically gentle massaged along that whole region though. This was usually much more well tolerated than tummy rubs, and there is less risk of accidentally causing your bun pain.

I have also slightly dampened my buns’ ears (just very gently, with tepid water on my fingers, as though I was grooming them) when I suspected overheating, and it seems to perk them up a bit.

It does sound like Tony is doing better. I know it’s hard to not worry even when you see improvement, so maybe you could set your alarm for halfway into the night to check on him? That way you still get some sleep, and it will also help you feel some reassurance .

I was wondering the same thing – is he doing better today? *fingers crossed*

We went to the vet again this morning and he thinks his liver is a bit enlarged so he suspects a small infection (,his temperature has also been high although it was a bit better today). He’s on more antibiotics to try and help that. He’s now eating a little bit better, he’s eating hay and greens if I hand feed him, although he’s kicking up ALMIGHTY fuss about syringe feeding. Half the CC is in his fur, I actually had to cut it off because it was all dried in and really seemed to upset him.

I’ve been extra diluting the CC because he doesn’t seem to be drinking, and syringe feeding him water with a little pureed carrot in it, and judging by the amount that he’s peed on my couch, he’s getting a decent amount of fluids. He’s taken up residence on my bed, which I’m weirdly happy to see is covered in pellets. Not healthy ones, but it’s a start. Tummy massages seem to be helping. I got up twice last night to feed him CC and I came home from work on my break to hand feed him some hay and give him a bit more CC.

All in all he seems a little bit better, but definitely not okay yet. Still taking all his meds and we’ve another vet appointment for Saturday morning. I’m hoping for more improvement by then (partly because my bank account needs a damn break) and because we’re moving next week and we’ll be a lot further away from the vet then. I’ve sourced a rabbit specialist vet nearer our new house, but we haven’t met them yet and I really don’t want to switch vets mid treatment. Plus the added stress on him of moving house (the new house will leave him with less space and it’s about an hour away from where we are).
                                O
I’m officially penniless now ? between having to buy a new car last month, moving house, and several hundred in vet bills, my bank account is in the red and my internet bill has already bounced… Luckily I get paid today so I’ll be able to cover the Saturday vet bill, but if he needs more treatment I’m going to have to look at getting a loan out. It’s really stressful! Usually I have a little nest egg but it’s been totally wiped out in the last few weeks. I don’t care though, as long as my baby is okay. I’ll find a way!

Tonight I am sleeping on the floor ??? because he seems happy on my bed and I don’t want to disturb him. I was planning on sleeping on the couch, but he’s peed all over it and I don’t have the energy to do laundry right now. I work shifts and I was in work late tonight and early tomorrow, so I just haven’t the time or the energy. I’m off this weekend though so there will be a LOT of cleaning and laundry done then!

Thank you all so much, I have to say I love you guys. I’ve been hearing a lot of “you spent HOW MUCH!? It’s just a rabbit!” from friends and colleagues and it pisses me off frankly. I’m glad that I have this community of wonderful, supportive people who understand how much you can love those little furballs, and who can emphasize with our current situation.

I’m a bit of an emotional wreck right now so I apologise, but oh my gosh you are all just wonderful x

I know, it’s infuriating! You can’t disregard him just because he’s small.

He’s fairly lively again this morning, although no more signs of poop or eating. Will be feeding and medicating him now in a bit once I get done coffee in to me, plus I’ll give him a tummy rub, so hopefully I’ll see something then.

Okay so I fed him, gave him his medicine, a tummy rub, and hand feed him some hay. Honestly I don’t think he’s getting any CC anymore, he just lets it all slide out his mouth so I’m pretty sure I’m just creating a very expensive mess… BUT he did a small poop afterwards, and he did it in his litter box! He’s been ignoring it for the last three or four days so I’m delighted to see that. I’m going to go to the pet store on my lunch break today and buy some fancy hay to see if that will help encorage him to eat a bit.

I am so, so very tired ?

I’m so happy he’s doing better, you might feel very tired now but you’ll be on top of the world when he gets back to himself! My Ruvik (the black and white bun in my pic) just went through the same thing and I know exactly how you feel! I know I would’ve gone crazy without the support of the amazing people on this amazing site

Buying different types of hay is a good idea, Ruvik wouldn’t eat any other hay but Timothy during her stasis even though she hated it before! Guess they do know what’s best for them… well except when it comes to freaking bananas and chocolate lol

He’s pooping and eating a little less today ? still fighting like a tiger against meds and CC though. We’ve another appointment tomorrow morning so I’m hoping for an improvement in his liver function at least.

To add to our stress, our landlord wants to show our house next week before we’re officially out, so we will be moving this weekend instead of next weekend; it’s the only way I’ll have the place clean enough to show by Monday, plus I think strangers wandering around would stress Tony out even more than a new environment. I’m pretty pissed off at her and technically I could say no but I really just don’t have the energy for a showdown this week.

I got some new hay; herbal Timothy hay, so I’m not sure if that’s the reason for the decline in intake or not but I’ll grab more orchard hay (his usual) and some mint and basil that he likes tomorrow. I’m getting I think about 15/20mls of CC into him per feed, and I’m doing three or four feeds a day. It’s extremely difficult to get him to swallow it. He’s literally just letting it fall out of his mouth on to his paws/chest/the floor. But I’m not as concerned about it if he’s going to eat veggies and hay. If he’d rather eathay than CC that’s fine as long as he’s eating SOMETHING. I just wish he’d poop more.

I did see him voluntarily drink some water earlier which is good. Before that he was only getting fluids that I force-fed and whatever moisture was in his veg (which I rinsed and gave to him wet for extra fluids), and his CC.

So basically, two steps forward, one step back. Really hoping for some positive news and a full litter box tomorrow. Currently it is 1.30am and I’m still up packing ?

He’s also really tempermental lol. He’s alternating between grunting, lunging, and nipping at me, and demanding head rubs, climbing right into my lap and licking my face. I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT ?

I only just got to read your thread due to not getting access to Not Read for a few days. I’m sending cooling, healing, eating & pooping vibes from me and Chewie. Must say, though, the sleeping on tne floor to not disturb Tony on your poop-strewn bed made me giggle with delight – we’re definitely birds of a feather here on BB. Will the new place have AC? Can you maybe find a small portable air conditioner where you live in case of future heatwaves?

The new place doesn’t have AC either (it’s not really used here) but it’s a house rather than an apartment so it’s
much cooler and has much less giant windows too. The heatwave has passed thankfully, but I have a big fan set up now anyway that’s been on for almost a week straight.

This morning I got up (out of my own bed which I finally had the energy to reclaim last night!) to make coffee, and when I came back out of the kitchen, Tony was waiting expectantly at his bowl for his breakfast! He hasn’t done that in weeks. I gave him a teaspoon full of pellets, some lettuce, a cherry tomato, and hay and he’s eaten the tomato and pellets already. Plus I notice some poop in the litter tray. Not a normal amount, and they’re a bit small and hard but DEFINITELY an improvement. We’re going to the vets now in an hour, and if all is well I’ll move Tony to the new house tonight or tomorrow morning.

PS I literally dreamt about bunny poop

Ok so small update. The vet is happy with his progress, so they gave him another dose of fluids and motility drugs just as a precaution. He’s happy he hasn’t lost any weight so he’s staying hydrated, and he’s happy he was looking for food etc.

BUT they still are concerned about his liver being enlarged. I’ve to call in with an update on Monday or Tuesday when he’s finished his course of antibiotics and then we’ll talk about going for a scan of his liver. This apparently requires a machine that is an hour’s drive from the vet’s, and a two hour drive from our new house ? I’m really hoping that it doesn’t come to that because neither myself nor Tony needs the added stress of a four hour round trip this week. I think an hour long car journey, a new home, five vet visits, and a bag full of medicine is stressful enough for one little bunny for a week or two! It’s DEFINITELY stressful enough for his mum… So now I’m packing up his stuff, and going to the new house to get it all ready for him. He can move in tonight if he calms down from his vet visit, or else I’ll bring him down tomorrow morning. I’ll be living out of a bag this week, but I think it’s the best option to get him settled first. He needs some relaxing downtime to explore his new home and meet his new roommates ?

I hope it all goes well with the move!!-when I had to move when my lil dude was sick i kept some of his blankets unwashed so that his smell was there already and it was less of a jump for him,
Hopefully the need to explore his new home will help get his tummy moving and his appetite up!!
Hope you are holding up okay too!

I’ll do that, hopefully it’ll help. Plus he’ll have his stuffy that I pack with him whenever he leaves the house even if it’s just for a check up. I’m in then house setting up his space and cleaning etc so he can’t just go straight in and not be subjected to too much commotion. I think I’ll pack his entire cage in the car instead of putting him in his travel cot. It’s an hour long drive and he’ll have more space in the cage. It’s not very big (2’x3’x2′) so I think it’ll fit in the car if I flatten down the seats in the back. I never usually cage him up, it’s just used as part of his set up, but I think it’s preferable to the carrier for such a long journey. Plus then I can leave his water bottle in case he needs a drink. The heatwave is over but it’s still very warm and sunny so I’m wary of his temperature in the car, although luckily that has AC.

Ok, we are in our new home! I haven’t gotten everything out of the old place yet, so I’ll be still packing for the rest of the week, but the bedroom is all set up and Tony and I are settling in. He’s still not pooping as much as I’d like, but the last poop he did looked a little bit healthier than before. He’s eating his salad (I gave him herbs mostly, parsley and mint to encourage him), and a couple of cherry tomatoes, although he doesn’t seem to like them as much as he did before. I’m also giving him a tablespoon of pellets along with that. I want to encourage him to eat, but I don’t want to fill him up too much with pellets Because then he’ll ignore his hay. He’s being a little bit better with the hay though too.

He’s still on all the meds, and I’ve found a solution for the critical care. I mashed in some banana and that really tiny bit of hay from the bottom of the bag, and he seems happy enough to eat that by himself. Which is great, because I am totally wasting my time trying to syringe it in to him. I got some carrot flavor vitamin drops to add to his water to try to encourage his fluid intake, but so far apart from the low volume of poops, we’re looking good. I’ll have to ring the vets on Tuesday/Wednesday and give them an update and discuss his possible liver scan, but for now I’m just excited to get an actual meal and sleep soundly tonight. There’s been a lot of cold sandwiches and couch naps this week.

Also last night the room wasn’t set up properly yet (Tony was but I wasn’t) and I slept on the couch, being woken at three am by Tony climbing on me, and again at 5am by him PEEING ON ME. His litter training has been completely forgotten. Bratty bun.

Following me around and jumping up beside neon the couch whenever he can. He seems in good form though, he has already attacked the new book shelves, and found himself a napping spot behind the bed. He is eating his food voluntarily and even used his litter tray twice today so I’m much much happier now. I still might take him back to the vet for a liver check, but we’ll see how our chat goes on Wednesday.

Sick bunnies seem to know that we r trying 2 help them 🙂 heat waves give Lancelot stasis too. It is sure scary checking a do a diaper with no poops in it. I find it easiest to do critical care with some apple juice, and cradling Lancelot like a baby. Hope tony is settling into his new home.

I finished up critical care yesterday and his medicines ended during the week, and so far he seems to be happy eating and pooping by himself. He’s still not great at his fluid intake but a little juice in the water is helping a lot. I’ve reduced his regular pellet amount by about half just to encourage hay eating, and it all seems okay so far. I have a few spare motility pills and Critical Care sachets just in case, but hopefully he stays okay and we can get back to normal!
