I am a new bunny owner. I have two buns who are twins and get along really well. I got them 3 and a half weeks ago. They are Netherland Dwarf rabbits which I know means that they are sexually mature quicker. They are both kept in the same cage. We are pretty sure that they are a buck – Oreo and doe – Crystal. They are twins and are both exactly 2 months and two weeks old/ 11 weeks 5 days. Today I woke up to find Oreo humping Crystal. I am pretty sure that Crystal is probably not pregnant but I have heard that it could be fatal for her if she was. So I am quite scared. To be honest she is quite a big little bun for her breed and almost twice as big as Oreo.

I know that I have to separate them ASAP until they are old enough to be spayed and neutered but I am pretty sure that they are too young to do that right now. I am not at home for around eight hours of the day during weekdays so I am not sure how I should be there to check on them. I want to keep them in the same room so that they are still bonding but I don’t want to lock one in its cage for eight hours until I come home. What should I do

You do have to separate them. And they need to be separated by more than just the cage bars if one is free roam in the room, because buns can mate through cage bars. It’s best for them to be in same room though, where they can hear and smell and perhaps also see each other.

It’s probably not fatal for your girl bun if she is pregnant, but she’ll need extra food if she is. Alfalfa hay and junior pellets (food high in calcium and proteins).
