        Hi all,

A few days ago me and my mom started getting these small red bumps and we started itching. It is probably because of my rabbit since they only aggravate when i play with him. The bumps are only on my thighs and legs. My bunny  has no dandruff so i don’t think he has mites? However his ears are too too red from itching. Below are pictures of his ears. Should i bring him a medicine?

Is your rabbit’s claws sometimes hitting those skin areas? There are instances where bacteria get caught in nails, and this causes pet owners to get a reaction because it’s a foreign bacteria from something the pet got their hands on.

Is that a place your rabbit may lick you a little bit? On days where I’m a bit more sensitive, Wick’s licks make the skin area feel a bit tingly. Perhaps this is a result of an allergic reaction.

Since both your mom and you have it, I’d examine what else you two have both come in contact with, aside from your rabbit as well, whether it’s a new laundry detergent, lotion, soap, air freshner, or bed sheet.

It could be that the hay your bunny eats is causing you to be itchy. The hay particles and dust can get on his fur, then he transfers it to you. Certain weeds and grasses can make me have itchy bumps. Or it could be whatever bedding or litter you are using. Try different hays or bedding and see if that helps.

I suffered through this when my rabbits got scabies last year, even though everyone says that their type of scabies isn’t contagious to humans (Hard to believe when those areas itched like hell, plus I got better when my buns got better). But even then, it didn’t infect my whole family or anything, just me because I was directly handling them. It always itches where I put my bunnies, from my thighs down.

I found out they had scabies because Ruvik had an itchy white dry bump on her nose, once it got to her paws she was shaking them like crazy. Upon close inspection, her fingers were enlarged and white, looked like she had a cast on each finger instead of pink flesh, like this: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Skin_d…early2.jpg

I’m hoping it’s not scabies and maybe it’s allergies, but you should make sure just in case.

If that’s the case, you should definitely see a vet. This is most likely not something that will go away on it’s own if your rabbit is suffering. Having a vet look at it will let you know what’s going on and what steps you can take to alleviate both your itching and your rabbit’s.

Sounds like it could be mange (scabies). Ivermectin is the best way to treat it.
