Wondering if its okay to shave my fuzzy lop?  Its 100 degrees where I live in California and I’m wondering if shaving my fuzzy lop would help a little to keep him cool?  I know bunnies regulate their temp by their ears, but wondering if its help even a little for him to have less fur?  I just want to make sure it won’t kill him if I shave him  I have a samoyed dog and if you shave them, you can kill them b/c their coat is designed to keep them cool.  So that is why I am asking

        Thanks!

As far as I know its generally regarded as a bad idea to shave a rabbit-their skin is far more delicate than a dogs and prone to tearing. they also need the fur to protect from external irritants.

I have clipped my rabbits coat back in the heat (part angoras have a lot of fur too) so it makes sense to clip them back using a round nosed scissors to help remove some of the insulation in order to help, but shaving in my opinion is a risky thing to do-if the temperature does fall your rabbit will struggle to regulate its temperature.

People use fans to help cool their rabbits, and mine get water bottles that have been frozen when the weather gets unbearable

As Dface said, rabbits have very fragile skin, so shaving probably wouldn’t be recommended. Other ways to keep cool can be helpful! For example, if your bunny has access to cool tile or other flooring, they often enjoy resting on that as it cools them down. Making little “popsicles” – cutting up fruits/veggies and freezing them with water in an ice cube tray and then letting your bunny lick them is a nice treat for them when it’s really hot.

As stated, rabbits need their fur to protect their skin. There are a few breeds that need to be sheared but a lop is not one of them. You can help your bun with fighting the heat by adding ice to their water, frozen water bottles they can lean on, tiles they can flop onto, AC, fans, ect
