        Hi,

I’ve just got two bunnies, ones male and the other female.

The boy started passing blood when he peed – took him to the vets they gave him antibiotics and anti inflammatories I gave him them for 5 days but after finishing the course there was still blood in the toilet area. So vets wanted a sample – gave them it – the sample I got wasn’t actually red in colour though – waiting for results of that.

However when picking up the female to bring her in from the run I checked her and she had blood on her underside. I’ve said to the vet I’ll get a sample from her and get them to test it to.

My question is – could she have caught the uti from him?

Or could this be something more serious?

Vets seem a bit useless and I’m just really worried they’re 15 weeks old

Any help/advice would be really appreciated.

Red or reddish brown coloured pee is not unusual for rabbits. Their pee can vary in colour quite a lot. If you are seeing uniformly red colour pee, I’d hazard a guess that it is not blood. Also, pee that is exposed to the air will tend to turn a reddish brown colour.
Usually blood is not easy to see in urine. Or you may see a little in the middle of a yellow puddle of urine.
You could pick up some urine test strips from a drugstore and test at home.

You might find this helpful to read. The second image shows normal looking reddish pee, The dark areas are just holes in the towel, not clots or anything.

Thanks for that an especially the link that’s really helpful – The vet couldn’t find any blood in either of their urine samples but because the urine is sometimes red and sometimes yellow the vet said it could be stones? Or possibly him hurting her when he mounts her – or she could have a uterus infection – I’m not sure to be honest.

Vet said to separate them also so we can check if the boy has stopped and now it’s just her. So i guess i’ll do that for a couple of days and see.

On the link you sent the bottom image looks most like what was in the pen.

It’s hard to tell in that image but the bottom picture has a larger area that is soiled and closer in colour to the rag or towel.
This is what it looked like when my rabbit passed some blood. See the ring around the red that is also urine?

                Image result for site:binkybunny.com cystitis

Did you see some normal colour pee around the red or lighter pink?

Are you planning to separate the bunnies? The mounting will continue to happen now and pregnancy shortly after. Intact rabbits can start to fight also, once they get to this age.

You’ve checked them over for any injuries? Sometimes rabbit mount each other heads, they might receive a bite on the genitals. Did your vet check each over for that?

There wasn’t ever a yellow ring surrounding it like in the image you sent just like a concentrated amount of dark red/orange almost brown – they’re separated now (but in cages right next to each other) so just monitoring them both currently.

It’s a pain because I was supposed to get them spayed/neutered this week but because of the possible infection have to wait until they’re better. So the plan was to get them both sorted kept apart for a few weeks like the vet said whilst they heal then put them back together. Also need to get his second RHD2 injection because vet would only give female it because he had blood on him.

I’m not sure the vet looked for a bite.. I’ve had a look and they look perfectly fine underneath so hopefully i’ve not missed anything Since separation(last night) there has been no blood(or dark patches) just yellow – so maybe it was when he was mounting her and injuring her?

Just really want them to be okay
