My rabbit passed away and I’m worried that I didn’t do enough.
On Friday my rabbit was running around the garden like normal, once back in the hutch he had some veg and was left will tea time where I gave him pellets/nuggets. The next morning my family opened the cover up to the hutch 2 rabbits lived there one on each story. My grandparents saw both rabbits and they looked normal. I do trust in my grandparents as the rabbits live in there garden so they do know what there normal behaviour is like, I was at work when I got a call my grandparents heard loud banging from inside the hutch my male rabbit was laying on his side panting. They took him out and places him on the floor which was in the Shade he seemed to have no energy his head went on l slump and he lost balance falling over they places him in a cool wet town in case he was over heating and syringed him water invade he was dehydrated. He went straight to the vets out off hours soon after he passed away, his hutch had too halfs so he was able to escape the sun, he had fresh water daily and have been neutered and vaccinated regularly, I used fly spray recently due to the weather getting hot. What could he have died from ? ? I miss him so much I visited him today wish he was still with me x

I’m very sorry for your loss.

When your grandparents found your bun something really bad had happened, like a heart attack or a stroke. If they hadn’t been vaccinated, I’d suggest RVHD2, rabbits go really fast from the RHD viruses. The vaccines don’t give 100% protection, no vaccines do that.

I don’t think you could’ve done more. He was eating and running around the evening before. He was fine in the morning according to your grandparents. If he had an underlying illness he was hiding it well, as rabbits do.

Sadly this type of sudden death is something we hear about here rather often. Your rabbit seems to have been very well cared for and loved.

When you took him to the vet, what did the vet say was the cause? You also mention that you had two rabbits living together, and only one died. Were both rabbits spayed/neutered? Do any animals have access to your rabbits?

I’m sorry this happened. I understand how painful it can be when your pet dies, especially without an explanation. It sounds like there’s nothing more you could have done. Play well at the bridge, bunny~<3

Try to be there for your other rabbit, you will need each other.

Rabbits are sensitive. They can get middle ear infections that spread to the brain and cause death. They can also get sick from a parasite called e cuniculi. It’s a microorganism classified as a fungus. It’s estimated that about 80% of British rabbits carry this parasite, asymptomatically. Then some get sick, the parasite attacks the brain or the heart. It can happen very fast.

I hope you and the girl rabbit can comfort each other now. It’s very sad when these things happen.

What a sad incident I wonder if he had a seizure? That might account for the banging your grandparents heard. I’m so sorry for your loss. Thankfully you have your girl bun to help comfort you.

I dont think there was too much more you can do. The vet said everything checked out a month ago, and theyve been acting normal since, so you had no reason to believe anything new had popped up. Sadly, since rabbits are prey animals, they are very good at hiding their pain and illnesses Happy to hear your ladybun is doing well, though. Hopefully she will help you through this

I agree with Bam. EC could have been the culprit. Unfortunately, symptoms can sometimes come on very fast.
