I have always been told Zel has a callus on his back foot but now it seems to be a bit more red. There is also a black line or something like that in the centre of it and I don’t understand what it is. If i can avoid a vet visit, I would like to as he just got neutered and my mom thinks it nothing and doesn’t want to take him. I don’t have my own job yet so I can’t pay either. Does anyone have any idea what this is? I can add a picture if needed but I don’t want to bother with him down there too much, as, again, he was just neutered.

It’s really impossible for me to say without seeing it. The black line could be a crack that bled, perhaps. If that is the cause, he will need antibiotics to prevent infection. Once an infection settles into the hocks it will abscess and then becomes very difficult to heal. True sore hocks are hocks that are red, inflammed, puffy-looking, cracked, bleeding or ulcerated. While you can prevent sore hocks from getting worse, like making sure nails are clipped short and given proper flooring, open areas like cracks need vet intervention.
