My husband and I are huge campers. We love to take our dogs on one to two night camping trips. I really want to take Luna with us, but I can’t find any info on bunny camping. Obviously she’d always have an eye on her, and we’d bring a big play pen for when we can’t watch her. She’d always have plenty of warm places to burrow, eat her normal diet, etc. Are there any precautions I should take or advice about taking rabbits camping?

Camping? As in, in a tent?

I’d consider it very risky. Even if she is calm and not scared of the new environment, there are many predatory animals to worry about. Foxes, coyotes, raccoons, rats, eagles etc can all pose big risks. If you did take her with, a very secure dog crate would probably be best, but I would also put a fine mesh on the outside of the bars to stop foxes and things reaching in.

Apart from that I’m afraid I don’t have any suggestions, it’s not something I would personally recommend.

Thanks for the suggestions! I know it can be risky. If we did take her she would be in a secure dog pen during the day, unless we take her out (with 100% supervision), and at night time she would move the crate into the tent with us (we have a large canvas tent with plenty of room). Luckily around where I live, unless you go extremely backwoods camping, there aren’t too many predators. I’ve only heard coyotes in the distance one time. I think I may try it for just a one night trip, or maybe just a day trip and see how it goes. If it isn’t working and she seems too scared or uncomfortable, I won’t do it again.

Also buns are quite excellent diggers, so if there’s soil beneath the pen she could escape and be lost very easily. Apart from the dangers of wild life (parasites, wrong herbs that a house bun might not be trained to recognize, insects, and all that good stuff) I’d say to avoid it cause buns like to have a routine and like to be in their territory. So I don’t know how beneficial it could be for her to be slapped on to a new territory for just a few hours and have all her routines discombobulated, it’s a huge stress.
Frankly, I’d keep the bun home, having her own adventures in the empty house.

You make some great points! I’ll probably skip the camping. My sister in law loves to come over and watch the pets while we’re gone, so it won’t be a problem to leave her with a sitter!

Yeah good call! I hope I didn’t come out as harsh, but I’ve learned that if there’s a way to get harmed, a bun will find it pretty soon. Last summer we were at our holiday home (bun not allowed to access the garden cause there’s a lot of eagles down there…), I selected herbs that are safe for him but didn’t consider that he’s not used to eat fresh grass… and he cut himself inside the mouth with a sturdy strand of grass

Not harsh at all! I appreciate the opinion. Your poor buns! I hope he healed quickly!

He did, but the closest vet over there is a 1 hour drive and my bun has had dental problems… so I definitely had a very *fun* weekend lesson learned tho!
