I was told Luna may not be a Netherland Dwarf because her ears are bigger than most dwarf rabbits. She was born on a rescue farm, and I adopted her about 3 weeks ago. I specifically asked for a Netherland Dwarf, and the farmer seemed very knowledgable, but I’m worried he may have been wrong! What does everyone else think?

She looks like a Nethie, she’s probably just a false dwarf is all.

I’d be interested to see how she grows a bit yet, but I do agree that she could be a Netherland Dwarf (false). All dwarf rabbit breeds have true and false dwarf individuals. The true dwarfs have a single copy of the dwarf gene, and the false dwarf rabbits have none. They are bred together because a rabbit that receives two copies of the dwarf gene becomes a peanut (which doesn’t live past a few days of age).

False dwarfs have larger ears and less of the squished in face.

Thanks everyone! After finding another bunny mom that has a twin of Luna, I’m more confident that she’s a netherland dwarf. Obviously I love her no matter the breed! She’s still growing, so we’ll see what she’s like in 3 months!
