Hi guys, I have a little problem regarding Peanut and Buttercup’s litter habits. They’ve never been 100% perfect with pooping in their litter boxes but about 90% – if they are really comfy and can’t be bothered to get up, they’ll poop wherever they are. I don’t mind this as the majority are done in the trays. However, over the last few weeks they’ve started eating their hay from outside of the litter box. I put hay at one end and so sometimes instead of jumping in the box, they’ll lean over from the outside and eat  No problem with this in itself, but today they have both left poop piles whilst doing so. Usually they might let one or two out but for a big pile they hop into their trays. Any bright ideas for how I can encourage them to jump in the litter trays and consequently not poop right outside them? I’d like to nip it in the bud ASAP

Could place the hay in a dispenser in the middle of the litter box? That way they need to jump in to get and wont be able to move it out of the litter box(Yumi is big on eating outside the box, it’s a nightmare)

You could try a hay roller-they can be stand alone

The trouble with hay dispensers (rather than just putting the hay directly in the litter tray) is that Buttercup will try and jump in just about everything we’ve tried   We’ve tried countless times to be more hygienic and keep the hay elevated from the litter but her little butt is determined

I could definitely try putting the hay directly in the middle of the tray tho, that’s a great idea. Might need bigger litter boxes though!

Bindi does this sometimes too. Actually doing this as I type. Sits outside the litter bin to eat the hay and leaves a big pile of poops. He only does it sometimes, so I don’t really worry about it. I just clean them up with a little broom and dustpan.

They’ve done it quite a few times now, the little monsters. I think they get a kick out of it

It took a few tries, but I was able to make a litter box that works perfectly for Wick. I don’t have to wipe up pees off the lip or pick up poos out of the box anymore. Maybe something like this may help?

                  — It’s a low-lip, high-back litter box with an acrylic pane attached with zip ties. Wick can jump in all sides, but it’s impossible for him to eat hay with his butt outside the box for a long period of time, because he likes going head first in. He’ll nibble from outside then jump in after he’s gotten a taste.
