I recently moved and now the bunny room is in the basement. The temperature is about 15-17 degrees Celsius down there. Is that a reasonable temp for my bun? I know bunnies do better in cooler temps than hot but I still worry!

It’s best to keep your room around 15-21 degrees Celsius. Anything higher will most likely cause heat stroke anything less then 15 will make your rabbit very cold and it’s not good for them to be to cold. Drastic change in weather is not good for your rabbit so keep the temperature around the same

I keep our house at 14-16 Celsius all through the winter, its ideal for the buns, and means if the sun comes out and its 5 degrees or more outside, they can get out on the grass for a couple of hours, as the temp change is less than 10 degrees.

Its a good temp. Fyi – less than 15 is fine as long as the bunny is acclimated. My bunnies have been in -6celcius just fine, digging in the snow etc. While they were still outdoor buns i gave them heatlamps but they didnt use the heated part of their hutch. The next winter i took the heat lamps away. As long as they are out if the rain and wind they r fine. For our house buns, large temp changes r what we try to avoid.

15-17 is perfectly fine It’s probably quite comfortable for your bunnies. Above 21 will not cause heatstroke until 28-30+ Celsius.

My bunnies managed 2 summers outside before I brought them in – at 37C (100 F). I know many rabbitries in Virginia that keep rabbits outdoors all year. Above 30 is definitely uncomfortable. My rabbits ignored the frozen water bottles I’d give them. I kept their hutches under trees where it is significantly cooler than in the sun, I gave them tiles to lie on which keep pretty cool, but they preferred to dig shallow pits in the ground. Since the soil is cooler than the air – that seemed to work. But they were still uncomfortable – and really appreciate being indoors! Properly acclimated – you’d be suprised how well they cope. So those are definitley not temps that we keep our house bunnies at – and my bunnies are way more comfortable now that they are indoors.

You are correct vanessa, rabbits that are properly kept that way and are born to it and used to it can cope, but I’ve also seen rabbits die from heat stroke at 31C, so I prefer to caution people towards the lower end of the temperature. Some simply cope better than others, and I think if they’ve come from a pet store or somewhere where they’ve been indoors, and a few months later they have to cope with searing summer heat, they’re just not cut out for it. Plus, sitting out in that heat all day, panting and hot cannot be any fun.

Agreed…they have to be born outside to be able to cope with it. Pet store rabbits wouldn’t last. And no – it’s no fun for them anyway… my bunnies are super super happy indoors. Especially poor Guin who has always been overweight. They did a lot of panting outside – it was interesting to see them dig those little “cool pits” I the ground though. Once I saw that they like to keep cool that way, I dug them an underground burrow, attached a corrugated pipe to a plastic storage bin as the entrance, buried it, put a shelter over the entrance to keep the rain out, they liked it. I left the top two inches out of the ground so I could still open the lid and inspect. I lined the storage bin with concrete paving stones to help keep them cool – and ensure that if the ground got waterlogged… the plastic bin wouldn’t float up-and-away… It worked really well. However… indoors is definitely best!
