Ogg is a Netherland Dwarf – un spayed female. At least 9 years old, possibly older.

Last night she was behaving normally – trying to escape the study where she lives to explore the house at bedtime. Getting angry at the dustpan because she knows I use it just before bed time. Eating her veggies and hay happily.

This morning when I entered the study to let them out of their area, only Terry greeted me. Couldn’t see Ogg. She then appeared, but only to go over the her water bowl and drink a lot of water. Normally she is pushing Terry out her way to be the first out.

Upon closer look I noticed she has hardly done any poos since last night. I offered her the favourite fresh veggies, but she wasn’t eating at all.

So rushed her off to the vet. She did a wee on my lap in the waiting room .

The vet said at her age it could be a lot of things especially because she isn’t spayed. All her vitals were fine, teeth were fine, weight is fine. But he could feel a lump near her mammary gland. He wasn’t sure if that was related to anything or not – he even asked all the other vets for their opinions.

She has been given pain relief, antibiotics, and I think something to stimulate her gut. And some liquid feed. She is now home and we are monitoring how she goes. I have given her a small dose of liquid feed as per instructions. But she hasn’t done a poo yet, isn’t wanting to eat, and isn’t moving much. She is still drinking and urinating a fair bit.

        Any thoughts?

Please note: She isn’t spayed because we rescued her as an older rabbit. Our vets are reluctant to spay her without blood tests first. We were going to do that earlier this year, but unfortunately husband broke his leg and lost his job so we haven’t been able to afford it.

I will continue to monitor her and update here throughout the day.

Pain or discomfort may be a cause for GI stasis, so I’d definitely go deeper about the lump matter (for example having a biopsy done to verify if it’s a cyst, an abscess or something bad). Buns don’t handle discomfort well at all so antibiotics and pain meds is good to keep her feeling fine. If she’s not eating at all you need to support her with critical care to keep her intestines moving. Since she’s an elderly bunny I’d ask the vet beforehand if it would be good to give her a big 15-20ml critical care feed every 5-6 hours or even small 5-7ml feeds every 3 hours to keep her a bit hungry and encourage her to eat solid food.

How does her belly feel? Do you hear grumbling noises? If you do hear them you can massage her belly to help her expel the gas and feel more comfortable.

          Do keep us updated!

I took Ogg back to the vet that night.

Her heart rate had dropped significantly, as had her body temperature. We made the decision to let her go, because even if she did survive the night, there would still have been a cause behind her symptoms that would (at her age) have been difficult to diagnose and treat. The vet was beginning to suspect cancer.

Thanks guys. I do really miss her, as does Terry. He got all his confidence from her – he was a pretty nervy rabbit when we adopted him a couple of months ago.

I’m sure Ogg is not only Binkying free, but also breaking into all of the bedrooms she can, and generally causing as much mischief as possible.

So sorry. There is a reason behind everything. Terry came into your life a few months ago to help you through this sad time…

I think so too. And perhaps Ogg here long enough to help him adjust before going to be with Weatherwax.  Im sorry for you loss, Bianca.  She would have gone gently this way. xx
