What do you guys use/recommend for litter for your rabbits?

I’m looking for something that isn’t dusty, and wouldn’t be harmful if Moxie ingested it (She’s a chewer lol). Also, it would ideally not be that expensive.

Wick is not a chewer, so unsure about the combination of this litterbox style with one. Wick has Kaytee small paper granules litter, covered with a screen made with plastic knitting mesh (7-count mesh). It does not smell and does a good job holding the urine where it’s sprayed. The screen prevents Wick from tracking the litter everywhere.

Wood pellet litter! Horse stall bedding brands or you could probably find the wood pellets for pellet heaters. Home depot or tractor supply I think are good locations.

Equine bedding or wood stove pellets have been the most inexpensive I’ve seen. I tried them for Luna, but they look exactly like food pellets, and Luna LOVES food pellets…you can probably guess what happened .

That idea about the mesh is very interesting, I’m going to have to look into that!

                Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I use that paper carefresh litter. My bun likes to eat it so I made a box grate out of chicken wire to go in over the litter in his litter pan. I’ve used dish rags under the grate and washed them everyday. Not a suggestion just something I had to do to save money for a while XD

I use wood based cat litter pellets.

Sarahthegemini- I’ll have to look into that, I’ve never seen that in the stores around where I live (It’s really all just clay litter). But I might be able to find that on Amazon or something.

Those cat wood pellets are basically the same thing as wood stove pellets or wood horse pellets. They are mostly interchangeable, just depends on what you can get. I love the wood pellets, they work SO much better at absorbing urine and controlling smell compared to recycled paper pellets! Make sure they say no accelerant added, and they should be fine.

You can buy the wood stove pellets at hardware stores, but some only carry them in the winter. I found a second supply at a local farm store (agway). They are super cheap if you can get them, about $6 for a 40lb bag.

I am curious if anyone else uses hay? I find my buns just like to sit there and eat it while they go so it became easier to just use it rather than wood pellets or newspaper.

Rabbits like to eat poo and pee in the same space. I wouldn’t recommend hay because you’ll end up throwing a lot away because of urine exposure which could lead to mold. Hay should be in the litter box to encourage pooing in the box though.

Hay will mould and also the smell of urine of hay is so bad!
                                  It stinks the house out.

I use wood stove pellets and I’m really happy with them

I wouldn’t use just hay – it doesn’t absorb so bunny will be constantly sitting/standing in mess.

I think if you do use hay, you should put down newspaper or some other paper layer underneath to absorb wetness. In my experience though, this does nothing for the pee smell and the litter box will stink

I use half a puppy training pad, covered in 2-3 inches of hay. Each morning, I lift off the top, drier hay, put that on a fresh puppy pad, bin the wet one, with the wet hay rolled up in it, add some fresh hay. Works great, with six hay boxes to clean each day!

Snickers is a chewer, so I put a sheet of old newspaper between the puppy pad and the hay for her, usually she then chews the paper in preference to the pad!

I haven’t found smell to be a problem. I put a layer of newspaper at the bottom to keep everything from sticking. I find the pee sinks to the bottom through the hay and I empty it before enough builds up to cause smell or get gross. If the top’s not dry hay I clean it so they’re never standing in pee.

I am hesitant to use any wood because of the potential for liver or respiratory issues.
