I keep seeing all these cool things where rabbit and/or guinea pig owners will make a room in the hutch or fill a box with hay and they seem to love it. I’m wondering if it would be fine to use hay from like tractor supply where it’s generally cheap but not as good and then have everywhere else filled with Oxbow hay. I have an old litter box (she only uses the XL one lol) filled with hay and a box but since I have to throw that hay out every 2 weeks or so it’s using up a lot of hay. I’m wondering do you think she will eat the other hay? I’m thinking of getting 3rd cut as she highly prefers smaller pieces but maybe 2nd if I can’t find it. Does better hay do anything healthwise vs good hay like Oxbow? I don’t want it to be a health risk in any way.

Also another just random question- what’s your rabbits favorite cut? And if anyone has a Guinea pig what’s theirs? I’m wondering because my neighbors don’t give their piggies hay and I want to get a better choice since it’s not as good as what I give.

If it’s timothy hay or other grass hay rather than e.g. alfalfa hay then nutrition wise it will be fine! Rabbits mainly need hay for the high fibre content to keep the gut moving and also to wear down the teeth. It’s hard to know whether your bunny will like the hay from the tractor supply – but only one way to find out!! I know some rabbits which will eat any hay and LOTS of it then there are fussy beggars like my rabbit who will only eat Oxbow Orchard grass hay :p Hay is good no matter the brand – it is essential for good rabbit health. Hope you find one your rabbit likes

Some buns prefer “tractor-supply hay” to Oxbow hay. You don’t know until you’ve tried though. Horse hay is fine for buns as long as it smells good. Hay must never smell the tiniest bit mouldy and it needs to have been stored in a dry place. If you can get hay from someone who keeps race horses you can be pretty sure it’s good quality, because race horses are very expensive and it’s not likely their owners would risk their health with poor quality hay. Hay for milk cows is good too, because the taste of the milk is affected by bad hay.

The reason why many of us choose Oxbow hay is mainly that they tend to have consistently high quality from batch to batch, and they’re a company that will respond to questions e-mailed to them. It feels safe to use.

As for cuts and types of hay, buns have their individual preferences. Some buns prefer crunchy, course hay, some prefer softer, leafier hay. Again, you don’t know what bun likes what hay until you’ve tried.

My bunnies prefer baled timothy hay, from the local feed store. They don’t like the expensive nicely cut pet hay. The other hay they like is called crazy tasty hay – from Bingaling store. It’s orchard with clover. But it’s not in a nicely cut package. It comes in a really large box, so it fluffs up just like baled hay.

She ended up peeing and pooping in it when it was still the Oxbow and it made a big annoying mess that I chose to avoid. I still use Oxbow though, switched to the orchard grass Timothy mix (I swear she is obsessed with it) and it also has longer strands which she enjoys. I also think my mom ordered some Small pet select Timothy hay which is great too.
