Hello, some of you may be tired of me posting but since I recently rescued these guys I have a lot of questions.

I noticed that my rescued bunns would “purr” with no food in their mouth. it almost sounds as if they are eating timothy hay but they don’t have any food in their mouth. I don’t think it’s teeth grinding because the sound is spaced out as if they were chewing but is it teeth grinding? its definitely not purring

Don’t be silly, post however much you want/need!

I think like a lot of bunny behaviours, it totally depends on the whole picture – teeth grinding is loud and often seen as a sign of discomfort. However if your bun was in pain, chances are there would be other signs such as lethargy, lack of appetite etc.

My bunnies purr softly sometimes and then at other times it sounds like they’re chewing rocks! But based on other factors, I don’t believe they are in discomfort. They do it whilst bunny loafed (not hunched or shifting positions), they still come running for treats and act like themselves.

i find it weird that theyd purr so much in a new situation

idk i think one of them may be purring cuz he’s dreaming. hes so tired, as he was sitting i saw his face slowly lull till it was touching the ground then his mouth started twitching, he puured, his eyes were still half lidded and his head started to shake as he was loafed. is this dreaming or unnatural?

Aw that sounds adorable! My bun sometimes does a twitchy, dreaming chewing thing as well, so it sounds normal to me.

Hopefully it is a good sign that they are so relaxed inside, probably very happy to be out of the elements

yeah. first thing he did after he got over the initial fright of a new human and new environment was nudge me for pets. I just worry so much about the little guys since their owner probably wasn’t the best and they’ve been living under a shed for a week.

I’d be tooth purring too if I’d been living under a shed and you came and gave me a proper home.

Tooth grinding with pain is seen together with other signs of (rather severe) discomfort. The bunny won’t eat, won’t want to be pet, it hides away or just stays put in a corner. It might shift position restlessly or sit hunched up. If you lift it up it will either just sink down to the floor where you put it back down or hop away out of sight to be let alone.

yes, the bunnies just came out of hiding this morning. I was worried about one of them who hid in the back of the cage and wouldnt move but would make the teeth purring noise. I am not sure if that one is completely okay as I noticed a small bug on her paw and some hair missing from scars on her nose but then she did a huge flop right in front of me. my life is fulfilled. this is my purpose. rescuing bunnies and watching them flop around in content

Flopping, I’d say it’s a tooth pur. When Lancelot grinds his teeth it makes a chattering/clattering sound and he sits hunched lifting his head slightly. When he tooth purs, it sounds like teeth grating rather than clattering, and he is in a snuggly posture, leaning against me, or pushing his head against my lap, etc. each bunny’s grind/pur sounds different. So do look at the body posture. It sounds like yoru bunnies are happy to be in your care 🙂
