        Hi there,

I’ve recently gotten a female Netherland Dwarf, she’s just over 10 weeks old and weighs 450 grams. I’m not sure that she’s 100% Nethe though. Her ears are bigger and sit differently that the male that I have and I’ve seen her colour and markings on a different breed. The only reason I’m worried is if she is a mixed breed she’s likely to get bigger than my current male and their cage won’t be big enough in the future. My questions are do rabbit ears grow and how can I tell if she’s a mixed or pure breed? Kind regards, Georgia

Not an expert on breed identification, but in comparison to Wick, I’d think yours is a mixed, based on the size of the ears and their orientation. Her face is still squashed a bit, so I think there’s some dwarf there, but again, can’t say that in confidence.

Average size rabbits and dwarf rabbits don’t have vastly different requirements so if the cage is too small for a pair of average buns it’s likely too small for dwarves too.

Whatever she is, she’s awfully cute!

She truly is a beauty, but I agree, she doesn’t look like she has the dwarf gene. Her ears and nose are longer. When you breed two Nethies to each other, you statistically get only 50% true dwarfs. This is because the dwarf gene can only be carried in one copy by an individual. Kits with 2 copies of the dwarf gene aren’t viable and die at a young age. This also means 25% (again statistically) of descendants of two nethies won’t have the dwarf gene at all. It means they will be bigger than a dwarf, but not humongous.

she almost looks like she could be part harlequin and part Netherland dwarf I’m guessing that the nethie was a kind of cream color and the harlequin was just normal colors

Colour means almost nothing in breed identification. Most colours and markings can be found in most breeds and mixed breeds. I agree that she is likely a mix though, doesn’t look pure Nethie to me,although she could as mentioned be a false dwarf. While some are kept for breeding, false dwarfs most commonly go off to pet homes.
