I know it has been FOREVER since I have needed to come and make a post. But alas, it is no longer smooth sailing in my bunny world so need some support. Sophie broke her leg. Just just broke it but she completely mutilated it. Bones were protruding. I took her to the vet. They are recommending amputation of her entire leg. But I’m not sure I can afford it so we did a last ditch effort of tranquilizing her to do a wound flush and close it up and do antibiotics and pain meds to see how she heals. They kept her overnight. She came home yesterday bright eyed and bushy tailed. This morning she’s a bit standoff ish. She did nibble on some pellets but she isn’t her usual, perky self. Like, if the amputation costs too much I’m scared she’d have to be put down. idk what to do 😐

If it’s completely mutated I don’t see how it’s going to heal with just antibiotics. You need to find the money to get her treated properly. Don’t have her euthanized just because you can’t afford to treat her – surrender her to a no kill shelter.

I have already contacted house rabbit society and they only take owner surrenders who adopted the rabbit from them. my local shelter will have her euthanized. They don’t put in money on sick animals. They kill cats and dogs every day if they require too much medical attention and don’t value rabbits as much as other companion animals.

I’m getting the feeling you think I’m just another rabbit owner who doesn’t care deeply for her animals. This is a very hard situation I am in. I care for her deeply and I certainly do NOT want to put her to sleep. But if it comes to that I’d rather prevent suffering than letting her go from infection. I can’t just come up with the funds as easy as that may be for some it isn’t for everyone else. She’s going back thursday and hoping the vet has a better idea of where we can go from here. She’s working with us but won’t accept payment plans

Surely there must be a shelter somewhere that will take her on, even if that means travelling a little bit.

I don’t know why you’ve just made assumptions about me – but it’s common sense that a mutilated leg will not heal. She needs proper vet care. Leaving her to suffer or having her euthanized shouldn’t even be a consideration in my opinion.

Find another vet that is prepared to take a payment plan.

Yes i’ve contacted all surrounding shelters. they’re all a few hours away but wiling to make the drive for her. Finding a rabbit savvy vet is hard enough. Finding a rabbit savvy vet who will also take payment plans is damn near next to impossible in my area. I can assure you, I’m exploring all my options and euthanasia will be my absolute last and worst option. It is the very last thing I want to do. Not to mention she is bonded to my other rabbit. I don’t want to do that. But I’d rather I do it myself than just dumping her at my animal shelter and her being scared and they do it.

Hi NBO123! I was thinking of you and Bam only the other day, I was trying to remember Sophies name. It’s good to see you here, although I certainly wish the circumstances were happier.

As for broken bones, rabbits are good at bone-renewal, but how well a leg heals is of course injury-dependent – as your vet seems to have told you. Bones tend to heal if they’re aligned properly and blood supply to the limb is good. I’m sure your vet has done her best to accomplish that. As for how much function can be restored is a bit of another story. Ligaments don’t heal, if they are completely torn, they can’t regain their function without being stitched back together. Are they doing a new x-ray in a week to see if new bone has started to form?

She didn’t bother with an xray at the initial appt because she could see everything. She goes back thursday though for assessment on how it is healing. She will probably do an x ray then

That’s horrible! Did she get her leg caught in something? Did the vet give you an estimate on how much an amputation will cost? I could be wrong but I thought amputations cost less than fixing the limb itself. That’s good that she ate a little bit. Luna sends healing vibes ((((Sophie))))

She’s continuing to eat and everything. When I went to pick her up yesterday the vet wasn’t in to give me a quote on amputation but said they’ll call me. I’m going to ask again tomorrow on the quote at her follow up appt. I just know it’s going to be expensive given their price on rabbit neuters and spays lol

It’s great she’s still eating. It means she hasn’t lost her spirit. We have had quite a few BB bunnies that have broken their legs and healed. A couple of the successful cases were in countries with very low vet-availability, so the breaks had to heal or the buns be put down. But they did heal.

Poor Sophie darling. Yes do everything you can to prevent her moving and get that bone healed.
Cage rest and bam will have to nuzzle from outside… or be let in if he is gentle
How cute is that little plaster though.

I’m sorry to hear your bun is hurt

If you are in the US, you could look into this program to pay for vet fees: https://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/?dtc=Q801&exact=care%20credit%20vet%20card&gclid=CjwKEAjw6e_IBRDvorfv2Ku79jMSJAAuiv9Y5b844S9-HrnI0_lutJcWe-ssWgC3xvlXenf2m_y2FRoCmNfw_wcB

It is basically a credit card you can only use for vet costs, and you have 12 months interest free to pay back any charges. My vet told me about this, and we got one for emergencies. Haven’t had to use it yet, but it is nice to know it is there just in case – vet bills can be surprisingly steep! You could ask if your vet will take this kind of payment.

I hope she heals fine! Sending good vibes.

🙁 I’m sorry to hear about the broken leg. I’d give her a chance to heal, with cage rest, before deciding on the next step. Which country do you live in?

Great news! The house rabbit society responded back to me. They asked if we’d mind going to their vet for a second opinion. She said if their vet recommends amputation they will take Sophie in. Or they could help cover some of the costs of her surgery to allow me to keep Sophie. So please send us some vibes!

NBO123!!! OMG, I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately, wondering how you were doing. I’m so glad to hear from you, but really wish it was under happier circumstances.

Depending on where the break is and how clean it is (i.e. the bones aren’t in a bunch of pieces), it could have a good chance of healing. If your vet is willing to try, I would give her a chance. It sounds like she is in good spirits, anyway. How is Bam coping? I’m sure he knows something is up.

Good luck with the HRS! Maybe if they help you out with the cost, you can help them out later by volunteering or donating?

I definitely plan to pay it forward as soon as I’m able to! I’m so glad they’re offering help. Even if in the end I have to relinquish her at least she can keep her life. She also said the vet she referred me to does payment plans so I’m 99% sure I’ll be able to keep her. Sophie has an appt tomorrow tk look at the wound again. The bones are in a few pieces. It was a pretty severe break. But we will see! Bam is doing good. I think he can tell something is up. He’s normally a very dominate dude towards Sophie but he’s been grooming her and being a sweetheart. She keeps hiding in the hut and normally he’d hop all over her to get in there for himself and kick her ojt but he has yet to kick her out of the condo. He sleeps on the floor right outside of the condo.

The timing of Sophie’s break couldn’t have been any worse. We had a baby a few months ago who is having some liver issues and we’ve been having to go through a lot of tests. Some tests haven’t been covered by insurance so we had a few Healthcare bills that needed catching up on. So we’ve used up a bit of our credit and only just now catching back up!

Thanks everyone. This morning it is clear she isn’t feeling like herself. I’m worried it became infected despite antibiotics. We go to the vet in a few hours and will know soon. I’m going to call the HRS vet soon after to make an appt with them. It’s a 2 hour drive at least. Should I bring Bam for moral support or no? Im not sure if I’ll be leaving with her.

I think I’d bring Bam. Moral support is so important for a poorly bun.

The vet is working on us with costs. Sophie goes for surgery first thing in the morning. They are keeping her over night. Pray she makes it through surgery. She has a hard week ahead of her.

They had a late start. I’m nervous that it doesn’t give them much time to watch her before she comes home from this surgery and then her first 2 days of recovery will be through a weekend so I’m a bit nervous.

The vet didn’t want to have me drive the hour to pick her up and Sophie not be stable enough ton leave yet. So I’ll be picking her up tomorrow morning. The vet said she will call me before she leaves the clinic to let me know how she’s doing

Thanks guys. People keep asking me if I will be getting another companion for Bam. As much as I feel for Bam I just don’t feel ready yet to get another. My heart wouldn’t be in it and I feel I couldn’t bond with it. I’d be open to one in the future but I’m in no rush to add another rabbit just yet. I feel because Bam is almost 4 years old.

At least you gave her a fighting chance. You didn’t give up on her. That picture of Bam and her is adorable. Take your time to grieve – you’ll know if/when you’re ready to get you and Bam another companion.
