ok so i am going to make a new bunny cage and i need ideas on how to make it. 

(my dad already dismissed the idea of the grid cage) any other ideas welcome

According to the ABRA (American Bunny Rabbit Assoc.) An ideal cage/house setup is at least 2 Feet WIde x 4 Feet Long x 2 Feet High, This gives your rabbit ideal space to hop around 2-3 times and allows him/her to stand up with ears erect without trouble unless you have a larger breed. Since you have been shot down with the NIC Cages Ill try and outline some possible ideas:

XPen (Exercise Pen) setup:
Exercise pens are great for bunnies as they can be linked and create a large play area, If you use a 24inch high grid which typically comes with 8 panels you can use 6/8 panels to make a 2x4x2 cage. The only issue with this setup is that you need a appropriate base and or Top to prevent them from jumping out. For a base you can use a 2ft x 4ft piece of finished plywood (smooth) and attach some 2inx3in borders to keep the cage held. This is the setup I currently use however its not as necessary anymore as I have a free roam bunny now. [Click signature below and click habitat]

Store Cages:
There are many store cages available to rabbits but to ensure the best try and find something that will support your individual needs, Most of these cages will be smaller than ideal but there are some sometimes that have all the needs for a rabbit, use your best judgment and ensure that your bunny will be happy. Some caged include runs and ensure that the cage is not meant for a genii pig as sometimes those cages are not properly spaced for a rabbit. With this setup you may have to include an external litter box or make a special are for your rabbit inside that’s ok for litter.

Hutches:
Normally used for outdoor rabbits but Ive seen some people use these as well for indoor use, a consideration that you have to have with these cages is that most are wire mesh bottom cages that can cause sore hocks and have other negative aspects such as being made from non-safe woods that rabbits can chew [and trust me they will] always use your best judgment and do what works for you.

Repurposed furniture:
This is a very creative option and allows a nice home for your bunny and provides functional space without having an are look like a pet area. Normally IKEA cabinets and sometimes book cases with covers can be taken apart, repainted, and re floored, and meshed to suit a rabbits needs, this method however can sometimes need the tools such as cutters, saws, sanders and might require special knowledge of tools and common wood works (ask your dad) there are many images of repurposed furniture on pintrest and you can always Google for some additional ideas.
