Hello, so tomorrow they are redoing wood floors and they’re going to use shellac as a finish, I was wondering if the fumes would affect my rabbit. The guy doing it said that he could seal off my room and just leave my windows open but I’m not sure if that’s enough. I don’t know if I should get her out though I don’t know where I would leave her. It would take about 3 days to finish, maybe more.

Any fumes will emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which aren’t good for humans or pets. At the very least I think it would be a good idea to seal off your room and keep it (as well as the area the floors are being finished) well ventilated.

Yea all the windows are definitely going to be opened. I was just not sure if that would be enough. I plan on also staying in the room with them(my pets). If it was up to me I’d take a crow bar to those wood floors pluck them out put down some linoleum and call it a day. Way less hassle, way cheaper and non toxic …lol

If the fumes get really noticeable, you could take her outside for a run in the yard for a bit? I’d also shove a towel under the door to help seal the room better.

Yea, I’m going to plug up the opening under the door for sure but unfortunately, I live in an apartment so no yard and once the door closes I won’t be able to leave till the finish dries. I just hope the fumes are not that strong, I’ve read that shellac is not as powerful as polyurethane, which would require us to vacate for a few days. So fingers crossed.
