Okay so in the UK we don’t have crazy heat but sometimes we do have a bit of sun! I’m looking for tips to ensure my buns are comfortable during any potential heat wave we may endure. I’ve already got tiles on my shopping list for them to lay on if they need cooling off (living room where they spend most of their time is carpet) Is there anything else I can do?

Water bottles to freeze and small fans are nice

I have a little mini desk fan that I put outside Theo’s pen and point it into his pen to keep the air moving and keep him cool. Make sure to place it in such a position that they can escape the breeze if they want to. Theo often pushes himself right up in his pen beside the fan enjoying the breeze! If its really hot blowing the fan through a wet towel can make it even cooler.

Cool pods are a good way to keep them cool – they are plastic things that you freeze and put in their pen for them to lie on to keep cool. Scratch and Newton stock bunny-proof ones. Although Theo doesn’t like his – he just attacks them lol.

Ice cubes in water to keep their water cool always helps. Putting up some towels etc if they have sun beaming on their area to provide shade.

Tiles are a good shout – especially if they’re housed on carpet.

Thanks guys My bunny’s are cage free so I’d have to be careful how I position a fan so they can’t actually touch it. I could put it on the sideboard and angle it down

With ice cubes in the water, is there any risk they’d try and chew them and choke?

Ditto the water bottles and fan. I have small battery powered dog kennel fans I put on the doors of my buns condos and when it’s really hot I put the frozen water bottle right in front of the fan. You can also use a bigger fan and put a cold, damp, well-wrung out towel over it and this really helps cool off the air.

If you are worried about them touching the fan, you could purchase a bladeless one – though they tend to be a bit expensive.

Tiles are great. You could get some cheap pine boards (book shelf boards), make a 4-sided box , use the tile as the lid and put an ice pack in the box under the tile. The box will help insulate the setup, and the tile will stay cooler for longer. Bunnies learn where the cools spots are. My bunnies like to lie on top of the floor vents during summer. I like little puffytails’ idea too, except you would want to be sure the place is vacuumed/swept so you aren’t blowing rabbit hair around. I tried frozen water bottles on their own, and they were ignored.
