Hi all, just a question about nails:

I read that rabbits need their nails trimmed about every 1-2 months, and that you should trim the nails when they extend beyond the fur line. So when we adopted Thor I got some nail clippers and patiently waited for them to get long enough…

2 months after we got her, we had a vet appointment. So I asked if they could also trim her nails so I could see how it was done. They took a look and said “oh no, they look fine, not long enough to trim.” Oh good, I thought, not to worry. Then 2 months later we were back for an unrelated reason, I asked again and again they said her nails were fine.

Now we have had her for almost 6 months, still no nails beyond the fur line! She does dig quite a bit, but the nails she does have aren’t super sharp or anything. Otherwise she is really healthy, and active. Have any of you had experiences with rabbits whose nails just don’t grow? Should I be concerned?

They do grow, or they’d be gone by now. The rate of nail growth is mostly genetically determined, and so is the quality (hardness, brittleness etc) of nails. Some buns and dogs rarely have to have their nails cut, they wear them down doing normal stuff. So I don’t think you need to worry. To an extent, nail growth depend on nutrition and in horses humidity is a factor (more growth in humid conditions). But if Thor gets normal food and is otherwise healthy and her nails don’t split or fall off, there’s no reason to think this is a dietary problem.

Thanks! Her nails feel strong and healthy. She must just grow them slowly and wear them down digging.

I guess I’ll just count myself lucky I have to wrangle her into nail trims less often
