Yesterday I got a one year old neutered male rabbit for my spayed female. I have his cage placed beside hers so that they can get used to each other. However, the rabbit hasn’t ate very much in the past 15 hours and I am worried about his stress levels. He occasionally thumps on the floor.

Should I separate their cage until he settles down?

How long do I need to wait to start bonding?

Is there anything else I can do to make him comfortable and eat?

He currently has hay, pellets, banana and a wide selection of vegetables. He has only eaten kale when it is placed in front of him when he is stretched out on the floor outside of his cage during playtime.

I’m not sure about the eating, but I think for bonding you should wait a week or two, to let him get used to you and stuff. If he’s a baby though I would recommend bonding now, before he gets territorial. Hope this helps!

If he hasn’t eaten for 15 hours, that is urgent. Is he pooping okay?

Yes he has been pooping lots the whole time. Ive been letting him outside of his cage all day and not eating doesnt seem to be a problem anymore. He has been eating more kale and pellets.

He might have just been having gas.

When you get a new bunny the most important step is space. Don’t introduce him to another rabbit quickly as he might feel threatened. Thumping is a sign of danger to alert other rabbits or playing if there running and binkying.

Give the bunny his own space like another room were he can be him and separate the area with a baby gate from the other bunny creating two spaces and after a few weeks then start the bonding process in a neutral area do not bond unless they are only fixed to prevent injuries
